Guarin was a younger son of Peter of Maule and as the lordship of Maule would pass to his older brother, Ansold, Guarin sought his fortune as a warrior. He accompanied William the Conqueror into England in 1066, and is mentioned in the Battle Abbey Roll.
For his services, Guarin received from King William I the lordship of Hatton de Cleveland, in Yorkshire, and other extensive estates in the north of England.
