  • Prefix: Sir

  • Note: 1

"Sir Henry Ferrers of Peckham (1448-1500) was only the second son of Sir
Thomas Ferrers of Tamworth but he prospered through having the right
connections and through marriage. His mother was Anne, one of the sisters
of William, Lord Hastings. He married Margaret, the widow of William
Wenthall (died 1468) and the daughter and co-heiress of William Hextall of
Peckham (1405-70). His wife brought him considerable estates in Kent as
well as the manor of Peckham. He must have been one of the retinue of 3.000
men led by his uncle, Lord Hastings, in 1471, for both he and his brother
John were knighted after the battle of Tewkesbury. He was sheriff of Kent
three times, MP for the county [in parliament 1472-75] and on the Kent
commission of the peace [1471-83 & 1490-98]. He was a very good attender
indeed at quarter sessions under Edward IV, claiming payment for forty days
out of the fifty-three for which there are records [in the period 1471-83].
Sir Henry [Ferrers] is an excellent example of a younger son who, through
court connections and a fortunate marriage ... established himself as an
active pillar of society in a county far distant from that of his birth."
