His son John purchased the estate of Cultra from the Earl of Clanbrassil in 1671, and married Martha, dau. of William Stewart of Ballylawn, Co. Down, aunt of Robert, 1st Earl of Londonderry.
The Kennedy family had strong connections with the Cultra area since 1671 when Dr Hugh Kennedy, a successful physician in Belfast, purchased the townland of Ballycultra and built himself a mansion. The Kennedys were of Scottish origin, being a cadet branch of the Kennedy family, the Earls of Cassilis.

In his will he mentions his wife Mary, dau of Arthur Upton, and the marriage contract date. Also mentions brothers David and John. But not Gilbert (although he would be alive)... Are the parents correct?
