    ---
The Castle of Mey, , between Thurso and John O'Groats, was built by George, 4th Earl of Caithness, whose third son, George Sinclair founded the family of the Sinclairs of Mey. Sir James Sinclair of Mey, 7th Baronet, was found the rightful Earl of Caithness in 1793; his grandson the 14th Earl was created Baron Barrogill of Barrogill Castle, but that title expired when the 15th Earl died unmarried in 1889. The castle changed hands several times and was purchased by the Queen Mother in 1952.
    ---
In 1529, George Sinclair succeeded his father, John the 3rd Earl, who had died during the Battle of Somersdale - an internecine feud between the Caithness Sinclairs and the Orkney Sinclairs.
George built the Castle of Mey overlooking the Pentland Firth between 1566 and 1572, then called Barrogil.
In 1567, he was chair of the jury who, most probably wrongly, acquitted James Hepburn, the 4th Earl of Bothwell (1536-78), third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-87), of the murder of Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley (1545-67), her second husband.
He died in Edinburgh and lies buried at Rosslyn Chapel. He was succeeded by his grandson, known as the "Wicked Earl George".
    ---
The 4th Earl of Caithness passed the Castle of Mey to his second son, William Sinclair. On his death a short time later, it went to the third son, George Sinclair.
    ---
John, 2nd Earl of Sutherland (c. 1526-1567), was poisoned at the instigation of George Sinclair, 4th Earl of Caithness.
    ---
In I544 George, 4th Earl of Caithness, seized the Episcopal fortress of Scrabster castle, north of Thurso, from Alexander Gordon, a son of the Earl of Sunderland who had been installed as a temporary Bishop while the Bishop of Caithness was banished.
