?Raphe Davenant (abt 1502-1552) adopted an orphaned niece and nephew, Ellen (married Gerald Gore) and John. Ellen?s brother John abt 1540 - 1606) had a son John, father of Sir Willliam Davenant?
The only odd thing about that account is that a John Davenant was bapt 1539 son of Ralph, ie suggesting that he was a biological son of Ralph.
Shakespeare: A Life, by Park Honan, 1998, says that Ellen was aunt of John Davenant, the father of Sir William Davenant, poet, which is consistent with Schoenbaum.
Her nephew Sir William Davenant was Shakespeare?s godson.
