Sir Thomas SURTEES (SURTEYS) (fl.1408) of Dinsdale, married 1 Joan, daughter of Sir Ralph Eure (d.1423)(q.v.). (Clay p.54)
1408 On a commission of array for Darlington.
An Indenture in the treasury states that Sir Thomas Surtees of Dinsdale received the wife of Sir William Claxton, "who was minded to go for the wars in France" (1416) into his house for a year. Also the lady of Sir Wm. Bulmer (Elizabeth, dau. of Sir R. Eure, Knt.) was placed under similar guardianship.
Aged 20 months at father?s death in 4 Richard II.
The Surtees Society was founded to do honour to his memory, and its badge is an exact copy of his seal.
