Hende, John (fl. 1400, d. by 1433), cit. & draper. St. Mary le Bow 14.
Sir John Hende (d. 1418), lord of the manor of Stondon, was Mayor of London in 1391 and 1404. (fn. 50) His two sons, both named John, were sheriffs of Essex, the elder in 1443 and 1447 and the younger in 1456. (fn. 51) Walter Wrytell, son-in-law of the elder John Hende, was sheriff in 1469 and 1471.
John Hende was a successful and socially ambitious London merchant in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. A draper by trade, Hende reckoned that debts owing to him and his stock of merchandise were worth around 4,000 to 5,000. He had around the same again in land, with manors in Kent and a mill, several manors and a quay in Essex. His income from his London property was put at around 54, six years before his death, while the Kent manors raked in 41 annually.
Hende died peacefully in 1418, leaving around 10,000, about 3.6bn in today's money.
Sir John Hende acquired Bradwell Hall, Essex, his principal residence, some time around 1383-1393 and Piccotts about the same time.
The Hende estates reverted to John Bassett [father of Gregory], who had married the daughter of Sir John Hende's sister Amicia.
