  • ID: I67942
  • Name: Roger Umfraville
  • Prefix: Sir 1
  • Sex: M
  • Residence: Penmarsh or Penmark
  • Note:

Penmark is a village in the Vale of Glamorgan, near the Bristol Channel. The castle, now in ruins (destroyed by Owen Glendower), was built in the thirteenth century; Gilbert de Umfraville built a timber castle here in the twelfth century. He was likely the father of Richard de Umfraville (and the 'name Gilbert' does suggest a Prudhoe connection); this Richard lived c1165-1226. He married Sybil, daughter of William de Torrington of Devonshire, a family that lived just across the Channel. They were the parents of (1) Gilbert de Umfraville (c1195-1243); and (2) John Umfraville, who married Alice de la Hurne (maybe Lanherne, Cornwall); they were the parents of Henry Umfraville (c1267-1328), who married Isabella. At least two children: (1) Elizabeth, married Sir John St John; their descendants eventually inherited Penmark; and (2) Alice, married Sir Simon Furneaux.
