  • ID: I7846
  • Name: William Reviers or De Vernon
  • Suffix: 6th Earl of Devon
  • Sex: M
  • Death: 14 NOV 1216
  • Occupation: Lord of Isle of Wight
  • Note:

His brother was 3rd Earl, and his nephews were 4th and 5th Earls.
Earl WILLIAM de VERNON (de REVIERS) was the third but only surviving son of
BALDWIN de REVIERS the 2nd (or 1st authentic) Earl of Devon. He was present
at the first (Ellis), second (Burke) coronation of King Richard in 1189,
being one of the four Earls to bear the canopy. (Burke says he was then
styled "Earl of the Isle of Wight"). He appears to have steadily adhered to
King John for in the 18th of his reign he provided for the security of Earl
WILLIAM's property against Louis of France, which, from his advanced age, he
was unable to defend himself. He died in Sept 1217 being predeceased by his
son and heir apparent BALDWIN, who had died in Sept 1216 and who, although
only 16 years old, had already married and begotten a son, BALDWIN, his
heir. So, William was succeeded by his grandson.
