    (The Scottish Nation)
Tolquhon became a seat of the Forbes Family. The 6th laird was killed at the Battle of Pinkie in 1547 and it was his son William, the 7th Forbes laird, who set about transforming the castle into what we can see today. The work began in 1584, under master mason Thomas Leiper, and took five years to complete, as recorded in a carved inscription mounted on the main gatehouse. William died in 1596 and is interred in the monumental tomb he had built for himself and his wife in the south aisle of the parish kirk at Tarves. The church itself has gone but the tomb survives and is now also in the care of Historic Scotland.
