  • ID: I05398
  • Name: Elijah "Lige" Rockwood
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 16 OCT 1835 in Ontario, Canada, probably in Leeds County
  • Death: 24 JUL 1895 in the Soldier's Home at Grand Rapids, Mich.
  • Burial: Soldier's Home Cemetery
  • Note:
Lige served in Co. D, 10th Mich. Infantry during the Civil War from Sept 1864 to June 1865. This was the same company that his brother, Ananias, served in. Lige's military records describe him as 5'6" with sandy hair and blue eyes. Note that Lige's first father-in-law, John Nelson, also served in the same company (Gloria Burns of Belding is compiling information about the Nelson family).
Sarah, Lige's 3rd wife was apparently buried in Pinecrest Cemetery at Oscoda, Mich. The stone says she was 38 and died in 1885 (Elijah's name was apparently also on this stone but it is believed that he was buried at the Soldiers Home Cemetery in Grand Rapids). The death record for Sarah at Oscoda indicates she died on 1 Jan 1884 and she was 38, born in Canada, and died of consumption. Lige's 4th marriage was to Anne Ingalsbee Rockwood, widow of Lige's brother, Stephen. Lige is listed in the 1870 census of Washington Twp. with Sarah and children. He is listed as a farm laborer but apparently also worked for the Pack family who also lived in Washington Twp. and were proprietors of a saw mill. In the early 1870's the Pack family bought into the firm of Woods & Co. which manufactured lumber at Port Crescent in Huron Co., Mich. A brief reference is made of Lige in the "Centennial History of Port Crescent, Vanished Lumbering Village, 1868-1968" by June Nelson. In the spring of 1877 "...the long-awaited snow did arrive in March and there was a bustle of activity in the camps. 'Lige Rockwood averaged better for the winter than at any other camp at the Pinnebog,' one of his teamsters drawing a load of 8,200 ft. for three miles." According to the "History of Lake Huron Shore" 1883, by Page, "E. Rockwood has charge of the logging operations of Pack, Woods & Co., of Oscoda. He...went into the employ of the original members of the firm in 1854, and has been in their employ since that time, and is the oldest man in their service. When the firm closed out its operations in Huron Co., Mr. Rockwood came to Oscoda. That was in 1878. His business is to superintend operations in the woods during the winter and bring the logs to the mill during the summer. He has a wife and two children... Mr. Rockwood is a veteran woodsman, and his efficiency is attested in the fact of having been for almost twenty years in the service of one firm." The 1880 census of Oscoda Village, Iosco Co., Mich., lists Elijah and Sarah, and their sons. Note: according to Arnold Reed, Anne's mother was Lavina Dove, and Anne was born on 25 May 1866 in Macomb, Mich.
