    James de Audley, son of Joan and Nicholas de Audley, was born Jan. 8, 1312 /3, at Knesale, County Nottingham, and aged 3 years at his father's dea th and aged 14 in 1326 at the death of his maternal uncle, William Marti n, to whose vast estates in Counties Pembroke and Devon he was co-heir, a nd eventually (by the death in 1343 of his mother's sister Eleanor) sole h eir, and would then apparently have been entitled to any peerage which h is aforesaid uncle may be said to have possessed. He had seisin, though n ot of age, May 25, 1329. Though still a minor March 21, 1333, he was summo ned to Parliament Jan. 1329 to Aug. 1386, when he died. He married 1st, be fore June 13, 1330, Joan, daughter of Roger Mortimer, by Joan, daught er of Piers de Joinville, which earl had been his guardian. She died betwe en 1337-1351, and he married 2nd Isabel le Strange. His son and heir, Nich olas de Audley, died sine prole July 22, 1391, and he was succeeded by h is great-nephew and co-heir, who was the grandson of his sister, Joan.

    Sir James Audley, or Audeley (c. 1316 - 1386), one of the original knight s, or founders, of the order of the Garter, was the eldest son of Sir Jam es Audley of Stratton Audley in Oxfordshire.

    When the order of the Garter was founded, he was instituted as one of t he first founders, and his stall in St. George's Chapel, Windsor, was t he eleventh on the side of Edward, the Black Prince. He appears to have se rved in France in 1346, and in August 1350 took part in the naval fight o ff Sluys. When hostilities were renewed between England and France in 13 54 Sir James was in constant attendance upon the Black Prince, and earn ed a great reputation for valour.

    At the battle of Poitiers on September 19, 1356 he took his stand in fro nt of the English army, and after fighting for a long time was severely wo unded and carried from the fight. After the victory, the prince inquired f or Sir James, who was brought to the royal tent, where Edward told h im he had been the bravest knight on his side, and granted him an annui ty of five hundred marks. Sir James made over this gift to the four esquir es who had attended him during the battle, and received from the prin ce a further pension of six hundred marks.

    In 1359 he was one of the leaders of an expedition into France, in 13 60 he took the fortress of Chaven in Brittany, and was present at Calais w hen peace was made between England and France in October 1360. He was afte rwards governor of Aquitaine and great seneschal of Poitou, and took pa rt in the capture of the town of La Roche-sur-Yon by Edmund, earl of Cambr idge. He died in 1386 at Fontenay-le-Comte, where he had gone to reside, a nd was buried at Poitiers.
