  • ID: I00814
  • Name: Onela lli Egilsson
  • Sex: M
  • Name: Onela (Ali)
  • Name: Áli hin upplenzki
  • Birth: in Sweden
  • Occupation: Swedish king during the first half the 6th century
  • Note: He was the son of Ongentheow (Egil) and the brother of Ohthere (Ottar ). He appears in several sources and is most likely based on a real pers on who ruled Sweden in the 6th century, before losing the throne to his ne phew Eadgils. The oldest source for Onela is the Old English poem Beowu lf which relates that Onela killed his elder brother Ohthere (Ottar), a nd usurped the Swedish throne. Ohthere's sons Eadgils (Eadgils) and Eanmu nd fled to king Heardred of Geatland, the son of Hygelac who had killed th eir grandfather Ongentheow. Onela then had both a father to avenge and t wo pretenders to neutralize, in Geatland. Onela attacked the Geats and kil led Heardred, while Onela's warrior Weohstan killed Eanmund. Beowulf beca me king of the Geats and helped Eadgils defeat and kill Onela. By a conje ctural emendation of line 62 of this poem some editors represent One la as the son-in-law of Healfene/Halfdan king of Denmark. See Halfdan f or details. In the Hrlf Kraki tradition, Onela is called lli hin upplenzk i, and called Norwegian. This change of ethnicity is regarded as a late co nfusion between the Swedish Uppland, the core province of the Swedes, a nd its namesake, the Norwegian Oppland. In both versions, however, l li is the uncle of Adils (Eadgils). In the Hrlf Kraki tradition, Bdvar Bja rki aids Eadgils in defeating Onela as one of twelve champions sent o ut by Hrlf Kraki.
