  • ID: I01716
  • Name: Jimeno I of Pamplona
  • Sex: M
  • Name: Jimeno I Garces 1
  • Birth: in Pamplona, Navarre, Spain
  • Death: 860 in Pamplona, Navarre, Spain 2
  • Note:
Jimeno I (d. (it is said) 860) is known directly only from a single histor ical record. In 850, the French court received envoys from Íñigo Arista a nd Jimeno, "dukes of the Navarrese". This is thought to conform with the C ódice de Roda, which lists apparent son García Jiménez as ruler of "anoth er part of the kingdom" of Pamplona, and has been used to suggested that J imeno too held a role of regional co-king or sub-king. The location of th is principality has been suggested to have been around Álava, where a cou nt Vela Jiménez, traditionally thought to have been his son, held sway.

He has sometimes been described as Jimeno the Strong, but this results fr om confusion with a much earlier man of that name. That namesake,in the ear lier century stood rebelion in the upper Ebro against the Arabs, relat ed in their Chronicles as <<Mothmin ibn Atlal>>or Maximino, son of Athelric (?)linking the posibility of connection between the House of Gasconny or e ven the Aquitanian with the Navarrese much earlier, and even with the Hispa no-gothic potentates like the Banu Qasi of the rich wine Villas in the Rio ja region at the foot of the Pyrenees. Likewise,he sometimes appears as Ji meno Garcés due to hypotheses about his origins. The belief that he was ki nsman of Íñigo I Arista has led to various reconstructed pedigrees, filli ng the gaps with otherwise unknown or chronologically misplaced individual s, the most common version making him son of a García Jiménez, and there by making Garcés Jimeno's patronymic.

He was apparently succeeded in his principality by son García Jiméne z. In the 10th century, Jimeno's house?the Jiménez?completely displaced t he line of Arista and reigned in Navarre until 1234.

No record of his wife remains, although historian Justo Pérez de Urbel h as suggested he was the unnamed prince of Pamplona to whom princess Leodeg undia Ordoñez of León married.
