    King of Asturias and León
He was the son of Bermudo II by his second wife Elvira of Castile, reign ed 999-1027, and was the first who used the title of king of Castile.
He began the work of reorganizing the Christian kingdom of the north-we st of the Iberian peninsula after a most disastrous period of civil war a nd Arab inroads. Enough is known of him to justify the belief that he h ad some of the qualities of a soldier and a statesman. His name, and th at of his wife Geloria (Elvira), are associated with the grant of the fir st franchises of Leon. He was killed by an arrow while besieging the to wn of Viseu in northern Portugal, then held by the Muslims.

Alfonso V was only five years old on the death of his father, but as he gr ew in years he endeavored to repair the disasters which had been occasion ed by the hostile inroads of the Arabs. He rebuilt and repeopled his capit al and brought the capital back from Oviedo where it had been moved. He a nd his wife Elvira presided in 1020 over the council which conferred the m odel charter of Leon and passed laws for the whole kingdom. He was kill ed by an arrow while besieging the Town of Viseu in Northern Portugal, th en held by the Mohammedans in 1028. Bermudo III, his son, was of tender a ge on his succession, though already married to the infanta of Castile, da ughter of Don Sancho and sister of Dona Munian Elvira, who married Sanc ho the Great, King of Navarre. The father, Don Sancho, died 1021, was real ly the last Count of Castile. On the death of Alfonso V. Sancho of Navar re took advantage of the youth of Bermudo (who not satisfied with assumi ng sovereignty in Castile in right of his wife) made a hostile invasion in to the states of his brother-in-law. However, peace was made on conditi on that Bermudo III, as King of Leon, would confer the hand of his siste r, Dona Sancho, on Don Ferdinand, son of Sanche of Navarre. This united Ca stile, Leon, Aragon and Navarre for a time at least. As far as your desce nt is concerned, the lines converge here, although history shows how the se kingdoms were fought over again and again.
