  • Note: 1901 census of Dresden, Bothwell 15 4 Wendover Jacob M Head M Dec 22 1831 80 16 4 Wendover Sarah E F Wife M Dec 4 1833 68 Notes for Jacob Windover: A farmer until 1849. Went to California via the horne to seek his fortune. He did well but on the way back he was robbed. He went back to California but did not do as well. He later (after his later move to Dresden in 1860 also went to B.C. in search of the same illusive yellow metal called gold. He gave a nugget to each of his kids. Mary Windover traded hers in on a gold pocket watch which still exists. In 1860 he moved to Dresden where his father was already. He farmed on the 13th conc. for a while. He opened a dry goods business for a while in Dresden. He also served as constable of the town for many years. Jacob was badly injured on a barge enroute to Detroit. From an undated paper clip: A PIONEER GONE On Sunday, Dec. 7, a pioneer and highly respected resident of Dresden departed this life, in the person of Jacob Windover, aged 80 years, 11 months and 15 days. The funeral took place on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. being conducted by Sydenham Lodge No. 255 A.F. & A.M.G.R.C., of which body deceased was one of the first members. The remains were interred in Dresden Cemetery. He leaves one son and three daughters: D.N. Windover, con. 11 Chatham Township, Mrs. John Wilcox, Tupperville, Mrs. Wm. Campbell, con. 13 Chatham township and Mrs. Frank Jorrey of Dresden, besides his wife. Jacob Windover was born in the township of Richmond, Lennox county, Ont., on Dec. 22, 1821. He followed farming until 1849 when he went to California to seek his fortune. He was not so fortunate, however, as he anticipated and soon returned. Again in 1852 he made a trip to California but with not much better success, again returning to his old home. About 1860 he came to Dresden. For a time he farmed on con. 13 Chatham township. He conducted a dry goods business in Dresden for some years and was a town constable for a number of years. After coming to Dresden he made a third trip to California, and this time was more fortunate, returning with several thousand dollars. When gold was found in British Columbia he made a trip there in search of the yellow metal but it was too illusive. About twenty years ago, while making a trip to Detroit on a wood barge belongning to the late Alex Trerice he was badly injured in a collision, from which he never wholly recovered. Of late years he had conducted a gardening business.
