  • ID: I13092
  • Name: Sir Alexander LIVINGSTON of Calendar
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 1380
  • Death: 1451
  • Note: Alexander was one of the jury on the trial of Murdac, Duke of Albany, 1424. On the death of King James I 1437, he was constituted keeper of the person of King James II; but Crichton, the chancellor, retaining his Majesty in the castle of Edinburgh, the Queen Dowager, favoring the just claim of Livingston, by a stratagem obtained and conveyed her son to Stirling, where she delivered him to his legal guardian. Animosities afterwards arising betwixt the Queen and Livingston, her Majesty was imprisoned by him, 1439. Crichton, the chancellor, by another stratagem, recovered the possession of the King's person. But, by the mediation of friends, a lasting agreement was at length formed between them, and the King was committed to the care of Livingston, as ordered by his deceased father. All differences were likewise settled betwixt him and the Queen, by a solemn indenture, published in Crawford's Peerage, dated 4 Sep 1439, betwixt her Majesty on the one part, and Sir Alexander Livingston of Calendar, Sir William of Cranston, knights, James Livingston, son and heir of Sir Alexander, and John Linginston, brother of Sir Alexander, on the other part. When the Earl of Douglas came into favor with the King, a parliament was held, 1445, in which Sir Alexander Livingston was denounced a rebel. He was improsoned, 1446, but released on paying a large sum of money; however, Alexander, one of his sons, was tried and beheaded. He was again taken into favor, 1449; appointed justiciary of Scotland, and was sent ambassador to England that year. He died soon thereafter. [(Fordun, II 484) (Pinkerton, I 190,1; 198,210) (Crawf. Peer. 276) (Rymer, XI 235)]
