Mr. Dennis Marvin Ayers, 78, of Prather Bridge Road, Toccoa, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Toccoa Nursing Center.
Born November 12, 1923 in Franklin County, he was a son of the late Otis and Farrie Cash Ayers, and lived most of his life in Stephens County.
Mr. Ayers owned and operated Ayers Auto Electric for 45 years. He was a member of Zebulon Baptist Church where he was formerly very active in the Youth Training Union Department and was a member of the Benjamin Sunday School Class. He had a great love for young people and was very active in supporting various youth homes, including The Boys Town of Nebraska and the Paul Anderson Youth Home in Vidalia. Mr. Ayers was also a member of the Sheriff's Association, an organization that also supports youth homes. In 1978, he received the Good Citizen Award by the Phileo Tri-Hi-Y of Stephens County High School.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Etta Whitfield Ayers of the home; a daughter, Nancy Ayers Addison of Gainesville; three grandchildren, Drew Calder Addison, Trip Clayton Addison, and Lindsay Danielle Addison, all of Gainesville; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mildred Sosby, Willie Jo Meeks, Nick and Patsy Hicks, Alton and Faye Herron, Tommy and Sybil Whitfield, Bobby Whitfield, and Almon Whitfield, all of Toccoa, and Homer Whitfield of Anderson, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Ayers.
Funeral services will be held at three o'clock Sunday, July 21, 2002, from the Chapel of Whitlock Mortuary with the Rev. Kenneth Moon, the Rev. Johnny Thomas, and the Rev. Don Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Stephens Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Toccoa, Georgia.
The body is at the mortuary where the family will receive friends from seven until nine Saturday evening.
The family is at the home, 176 Prather Bridge Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Zebulon Baptist Church Building Fund, 1127 West Currahee Street, Toccoa, Ga., or to the Alzheimer's Asso., 1841 Clifton Road, NE, Atlanta, Ga.
