  • Note:
During the first few years, families of St. John's worshipped at St. Augustine in Minster, Ohio. Services were held only once a month. The first Mass of St. John's parish was held at a parishioner's home in June 1836. "The first school at St. John's was established in 1837 with John Reichert as the first teacher."

"JOSEPH J. REICHERT, hotel keeper and dealer in live stock, at Maria Stein Station, was born September 21, 1846. He is a son of John Reichert, who was born in Baden, Germany, in 1800, and who, at an early age, learned the trade of shoemaker, and at this trade he worked about seven years.

John Reichert was married, in 1822, to Miss Anna M. Stucke, a native of Germany, and not long after his marriage he emigrated to the United States, landing in New York, and had to borrow money to get away from that city. From New York he went to Chambersburg, Pa., where he remained for two years, and then removed to Maria Stein, Mercer County, Ohio, where he purchased forty acres of government land, which he cleared and improved, and to which he added at different times two other forty-acre tracts, making 120 acres in all, and this he converted into one of the best farms in Marion township. Upon this excellent farm he resided until his death, which occurred in 1878. After his children grew up so as to be able to carry on the farm, Mr. Reichert, who was a well educated man, began teaching school, followed that profession for twenty years, and was very successful. He was a member of the Catholic church, a democrat in politics and a liberal-minded, intelligent and highly esteemed citizen. His wife was also a member of the Catholic church, and died in 1870. She bore her husband the following children: Henry, Eve, Killian, Katie, Augustine, Barbara, John, Mary, Joseph J., the latter of whom is the subject of this sketch.

Joseph J. Reichert was born in Maria Stein, Mercer county, Ohio, ...."

THE HISTORY OF THE REICHERT FAMILY

"John Joseph Reichert was born in Grussloch near Heidelberg, in the Province of Baden, Germany on Nov. 16, 1800. In the old country he was s shoemaker by trade. On Nov. 16, 1825 he married Anna Maria Stucke who was born on Oct. 10, 1802. Their marriage tooks place in their home town in Europe.

About 8 or 9 years after their marriage they decided to emigrate to America and to a just started tiny German settlement in Maria Stein, Mercer County, Ohio about which they had heard reports in the old country.

They landed in New York and had to borrow money to get out of town. They made their way to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania where they resided for almost two years. They finally continued their journey to Maria Stein and became some of the first settlers there.

They acquired a tract of forested land, cleared and cultivated it. This land which they acquired is located one fourth mile west of Maria Stein Station on State Route 119, and has since been known as the Reichert Homestead. Land at that time sold for $1.25 per acre.

Soon the tiny community realized the need for a school and John Joseph Reichert was selected as the first teacher and he continued in this position for some twenty years.

Communicatons maintained by John Joseph Reichert with is relatives in Germany, after his arrival in America, indicate that he had a step-brother, Frantz Reichert, in Nuslock bei Heidelberg in Groosherzogthum, Baden, Germany.

To the union of Mr. & Mrs. John Joseph Reichert were born 10 children. Five of these were born in Germany and five in Maria Stein, Ohio.

John Joseph Reichert died on Jan. 20, 1877 and his wife Anna Maria died May 29, 1871. Both are buried in St. John's Cemetery at Maria Stein, Ohio in unmarked graves."
