Gary H. Rice (Ret.) Colonel, Form the Water's Edge (GEHR Publishing of Mississippi Mills), p gs46,7
"The marriage of sixty-two year old Captain Asa Rice and twenty year old Esther Gould, mark s the beginning of my famly's fifth generation in America. He was born in Guilford on Februar y 8, in either 1731/1732. Esther, the daughter of stephen Gould and Esther Wilder, was born o n October 24, 1773 in Warwick. They were married in Guilford, by Pastor Elijah Wollage on Oct ober 23, 1794.

Several Rice families were early residents of Guilford, Michah Rice, with his wife, Silence a nd their two year old daughter Sarah, were its first settlers. Their home on lot seventy-seve n was on the west side of a road leading south through the hollow, and about 100 rods sout h of Broad Brook bridge. Their second daughter has the distinctiion of being the first whit e child to be born in Guilford on March 2, 1761.

My ancestor, Asa Rice, was Micah's brother and his property in Guilford included parcels on l ots 32, 84 and sixty-four respectivly. The only information that has been uncovered thus fa r regarding his first wife and their children, is contained in the town of Guilford's first c ensus, which recorded Asa, an unnamed wife and seven unnamed children. He was again enumerate d there in 1790, this time as the head of a family of four. Asa did not wed Esther Gould unti l 1794, however and all seven of their children were born subsequent to that.

From Guilford's earliest days it had governed itsellf much as an independent republic, wit h the town's officers being elected annually. At its first meeting, on May 19, 1772, Asa wa s elected as sealer of weights and measures. He remained active in the town affairs throughto ut his live, and at various times he held appointments as a fence viewer, commissioner for la ying out highways, an overseer to the poor and Grand Juryman. He also served on several tow n committees. He was seveny-five years old when he died in Guilford on August 16, 1806, and w as buried in the Blanchard Cemetery. In 1812 (30 Jan.) his wife Esther married Andrew Parson s. When she died, on September 21, 1821 they buried her beside him, ( Andrew Parsons) in th e Blanchard Cemetery."

Will of Asa Rice, Volume 3, pg 247 of Marlboro District Court; FHL film #029139

Ephraim Nichols and Elihu Root of Guilford in the district of Marlboro exhibited for Probat e a writing proporting to be the last will & testament of Asa Rice late of Guilford aforsaid , deceased.

I, Asa Rice of Guilford, Windham Vermont this twenty second day of March in the year of our Lord 1 805, being weak in body but of sound mind and memory.....
I give to my beloved wife Esther one thrid part of my estate both real and personal during he r natural live
I give to my daughter Abigail Whitney, seventeen dollars
I give to my son Asa, four hundred and fifty dollars
I give to my son Joseph, four hundred and fifty dollars
I give to my son Emery four hundred and fifty dollars
I give to my daughter Catherine, two hundred and twenty five dollars
Farming tools to be divided among my sons
Daughter Catherine should have all the household furniture not all ready disposed of

Capt. Ephraim Nichols and Lieut. Eluhu Root are Executors /s/ Asa Rice
Witnesses are William Bigelow, Asa Rice 2nd, and Pattie Gould
RESEARCHERS NOTE: I believe that the Pattie Gould who was a witness to this will is Martha G ould born 1784 and married Jotham Franklin 29 Nov 1807. She is the sister of Esther (Gould ) Rice. Patti is the diminutive name for Martha in that era of time. I believe that the Asa G ould 2nd, who also witnessed the deed is the son of Micah Rice and nephew of Captain Asa Rice . These two witnesses pretty well prove the identity of both Captain Asa Rice and his wife Es ther Gould.

Will accepted and proved 26 Aug 1806
Inventory on pg 276 gives $3496.10 of which $3000 was for real estate.

pg 547: Widows petition for allowance for supporting her six small children, the youngest o f which is not yet two years old. Allowance was granted on 16 Sep 1807. Asa Rice was appointe d guardian to minor children, Asa Rice 2nd, Daniel Rice, Joseph Rice and Emery Rice. Esther R ice was appointed guradian to Catherine Rice and Esther Rice. Esther was most likely born aft er the death of her father.

RESEARCHERS NOTE: These are the six children of Captain Asa Rice and his wife Esther. Abigai l (Rice) Whitney, also named as an heir in his will would have to be a daughter by a previous , still , marriage. I have not yet identified her.

Vol 10: Esther Rice of Guilford, a minor above the age of 14 and heir to the estate of Asa Ri ce, chose Isaac Barbour to be her guardian on 3 Jan 1821.

The division of the estate of Captain Asa Rice was made 27 April 1810 and includes the dowe r of the widow Esther. A sale of real estate took place to help pay some of the costs involve d. Land was set off to the widow Esther, Joseph Rice, Daniel Rice, Asa Rice, eldest son, Emor y Rice, Esther Rice, and Catherine Rice.

On the 9th day of Jul 1810 Rufus Jacobs of Guilford was appointed guradian to Daniel Rice, so n and heir of the estate of Asa Rice late deceased, of Guilford.

An index to Guilford Vital Records give the following:
    Abigail Rice b 15 May 1751 recorded in Book B. pg 59
    Sylvanis Rice b 3 Sep 1773; d 26 Sep 1777 death recorded in Book b pg 59
    Abigail Rice (again) b 25 Aug 1775; d Sep 27 1777 "
    Francis Rice, b 29 Oct 1777; d 10 {Sep} 1777 "

The Official History of Guilford pn pg 284 in Cemetery records gives the following:
    Abigail Rice d 1777
    Capt. Asa Rice d 1806
    Francis Rice d 1777
    Salvenas Rice d 1777

QUESTION: Is it possible that these are some of the children of Captain Asa Rice and his unkn own first wife? It would seem to me that the first Abigail given in the Index would have bee n the one who died on 27th of Sep 1777 and the second Abigail (who is given a death date) wou ld have been named for her deceased older sister [A recorders error]. She could possibly be t he daughter named as Abigail Whitney in the will of Asa Rice. She most likely is the only sur viving child at the time of the writing of the will and may not have survived until the estat e was divided and set off as she is not named in the settlement of the estate. A study of th e Whitney family will be helpful here as well as a contact with someone in Guilford who can d o cemetery searches for us
