Joseph was baptized at Shalbourne,Wiltshire/Berkshire, England fourth child of William 2 and Abigail (Briant) Carpenter
Joseph migrated to America with his parents in the ship Bevis at an early age. He first resided at Weymouth, Mass. He latter was in Rehboth
In 1661 shortly after his father's death the family removed to Swansea. Feb 1668 he was living in Swansea. When Swansea was organized he received two acres for which he paid 12 pounds 8 shillings, and eventually he had 8 acres of land.
22 Feb 1669/70 Joseph had become a second rank proprietor at Swansea Bristol Co. Mass when he became the twelfth admitted inhabitant to sign the town"s covenant. A proprietor's rank in Swansea's three tiered system determined the amount of acreage he received in common-land divisions. 1663 he was one of the Founders of the first Baptist Church in Swanses
Joseph was the founder of the Baptist Church in Swansea, Mass.
He died age 42 Will dated 3 May 1675 he leaves to sons Joseph, Benjamin, and John "my Rights of Comonage within the Towne of Rehoboth and all my Rights on the east syde of the River" Joseph was buried three days after naming wife Margaret (who was with child) his executrix. His estate inventory which Margaret submitted to the court on 21 Mar 1675/76 was exhibited on 2 Nov 1676 as was her own which had been taken on 4 Oct 1676.
Joseph was buried in that part of Swansea now Barrington, Rhode Island and it is highly probable that Margaret is buried there also.
10 Jan 1708 John Carpenter of East Greenwich, Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantation, sold to his brother Benjamin of Swansea "The one third part of two Reanks in ye undevided Lands There"
This was part of land in Swansea that John had inherited from his father Joseph more than 30 years before.
