Widely Known Retired Manufacturer Dies at Home of Son
Daniel A. Thomas, retired manufacturer, died at the home of his son, Franklin M. Thomas, 1003 The Terrace, late Thursday night, aged 93 years.
Mr. Thomas was the son of Jacob G. Thomas and Nancy Long Thomas. He was reared on the Thomas farm in District No. 17, and was engaged in farming until 1877 when he began teaching school at the Antietam School building, and taught from 1877 until 1882. He then engaged in the fertilizer and livestock business, and in 1892 established a fertilizer manufacturing plant in this city and under the name of D. A. Thomas & Co. This organization became the Central Chemical Co. in 1910, with branches in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Mr. Thomas also engaged in farming and operated two farms close to Hagerstown.
In 1875 Mr. Thomas married Miss Susan Mumma, of Sharpsburg, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Miller Mumma.
Earlier in life Mr. Thomas servied as director of several of the banking institutions of this city. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren, this city.
Surviving relatives are son, Franklin M., one grandchild, and brothers, Samuel P. Thomas, this city, and G. Milton Thomas, York, Pa.
Services Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., at the home, 1003 The Terrace, Rev. A. M. Dixon and Rev. Paul M. Robinson officiating.
The body may be viewed at the Coffman funeral home until sunday morning. Interment in Rose Hill cemetery.
