      JOHN 'JACK' A. MCCANNELL

CALAIS and EASTPORT - John "Jack" A. McCannell, passed away peacefully on the morning of Jan. 9, 2006. He was born Aug. 28, 1926, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick to Cordelia (Norton) and Neil McCannell. He came from a large family, growing up in Princeton with 11 brothers and sisters and many relatives in Baileyville and on Beals Island, known to all of them as "Jackie." Jack left Washington County as a teen, looking for work and a bit of adventure, living mostly in the Bangor area. He returned in the late 60's with his wife, Catherine (Lowe) and two children, Karen and Mary. He worked for the Mearl Corporation in Eastport before eventually starting a small clothing store in 1976, at the head of the breakwater, known to everyone as the "Shirt Shop." He enjoyed running the business and looked forward to going to work. It gave him an opportunity to be in touch with the town and sometimes a chance to help those who needed it. He especially enjoyed seeing familiar "summer people" and returning vacationers year after year. Often taped to the side of the cash register were pictures of these friends and their children. Jack had a number of hobbies, including woodcarving and painting, but will best be remembered for his love of amateur radio. He enjoyed talking on the CB as "Carver" to friends in Lubec and Campobello in the 70's. He also enjoyed "skipping", talking on a Tram radio to people all over the world. His daughter remembers him climbing to the roof on a number of occasions to adjust the antenna just right and the day when finally he brought home some gadget that would do it for him from the kitchen! As Jack got older he liked spending time in the garden and made it a personal quest to grow the best tomatoes, trying one summer, seven different varieties to see which would have the best flavor. For the past three years, Jack lived at Washington Place, an assisted living facility in Calais. He had his independence as well as the help he needed with his meds and meals. The staff there was wonderful and he thought of them as part of his family. Because of the care he received while at Washington Place and the care of Dr. Peter Wilkinson, he was able to spend this past Christmas with his family and his last days with those who knew him. Jack was predeceased by his wife, Catherine; an infant son, Thomas; and his daughter, Karen Devlin; his brothers, Oscar, Willis, Don, Norton and Richard; and sisters, Joyce, Marilyn and Florence. He is survived by his daughter, Mary her husband, Dana Davidson and her children, Amy, Michael, Katy and Jacob Muir of Calais; as well as granddaughter, Whitney Devlin of Brewer. Jack is also survived by his sister, Ruth Ann McCannell of Houlton; his brother, Neil "DA" and his wife, Dot McCannell of Lewiston; and his brother, James McCannell of Vienna, Va., many, many nieces nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service and graveside committal will be held in the spring and announced at a later date. Jack best enjoyed flowers in gardens and fresh air. Therefore, at his request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Activity Kitty, care of Karen Constant, Washington Place, 40 Palmer St., Calais, ME 04619. Flagg Funeral Home, Eastport.
