Barbara M. English, 75, died Saturday at her home.

She was born in Portland, Maine, a daughter of Osmond and Beryl Bryant Faulkingham.

An avid horsewoman, she was state reserve champion horsewoman in her youth, and continued to ride until the onset of her illness.

She enjoyed sailing, and sailed out of Centerboard Yacht Club in South Portland, Maine, the Port Norfolk Yacht Club in Boston, the Squantum Yacht Club and Marina Bay in Quincy. Along with her father and her husband, Robert F. English, Mrs. English won several Maine lightning class sailing regattas.

She was one of the first women in New England to earn advanced certification from the Power Squadron, her family said.

Mrs. English also enjoyed many years of family cruising along the New England coast, chartering in the Caribbean and, as recently as February, windjammer sailing to numerous destinations with friends.

After selling her own sloop in 1991, Mrs. English enjoyed annual horseback vacations on a working ranch in Brush Creek, Saratoga, N.Y.

      Her husband died previously.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jack (Sharon) Josephson of Ipswich and Denni Burr of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two grandsons, Jon Burr of Quincy and Eric Josephson of Ipswich; a granddaughter, Trina Josephson Schell of Gloucester, and four great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., Wollaston, where a funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Mt. Wollaston Cemetery, Quincy.
