STONINGTON - Lyle Griffin, 74, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, due to complications from lung cancer at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. He was born July 13, 1935, on Beals Island, to parents Leeman and Bernice (Faulkingham) Griffin.
Lyle attended grade school in Beals, then middle and high school in Stonington, where he played center for the Stonington Rockets. He graduated from Stonington High in 1955 and joined the U.S. Coast Guard, where he served on the MV General Green, Gloucester, Mass., achieving the rank of quartermaster. After briefly serving as constable for the town of Stonington, Lyle served for 10 years in the Maine Department of Marine Resources as a coastal warden on Vinalhaven and later in Waldoboro. Lyle returned to the island as a commercial fisherman in 1974 and later worked as a restaurant owner/operator, first of Griff's Place, Deer Isle, and then The Depot, Pottsboro, Texas.
Lyle returned to the Island in 2003 after the death of his wife of 42 years, Laura.
Lyle is survived by two sons, Lyle Jr., 47, of McKinney, Texas, and Kirk, 46, of Vacaville, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Erin, 20, Lauren, 19, Maegan, 18, Kaitlyn, 11, and Mikhaela, 9.
A graveside memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at Gray's Hill Cemetery, Little Deer Isle. Flowers may be sent via Fairwinds Florist of Blue Hill.
