KATHARINE MARIE HIGGINS
BAR HARBOR - Katharine Marie Higgins, 88, died Aug. 28, 2009, at a Bar Harbor hospital. She was born Jan. 17, 1921, in Bangor, the daughter of Allan Dean and Katherine (Dagley) Faulkingham.
She graduated from Bangor High School and Maine School of Commerce. In 1941, she married George Loring Higgins Jr., who soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. When he returned from his tour of duty in England, Kaye and Bud discovered that they had a mutual love for the ocean. They moved to Mount Desert Island, where they bought and operated a grocery store, lunch room and fish wharf, in that order. Later, when the supply of fish diminished, they turned to lobstering for a living. They spent many happy hours aboard their several lobster boats, the last of which, the JAMIE L is still in operation. Through the years, Kaye had been employed by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., Arthur Chapin Co., Lawrence S. Robinson Co., Mount Desert High School, Maine State Ferry Service and Bass Harbor Marine. She enjoyed acrylic painting, bird carving and writing poems about the island she loved. She belonged to the Gilley Museum and volunteered at Southwest Harbor Library. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Mount Desert Chapter No. 20.
She is survived by her husband, Bud, who was her best friend and constant admirer of 68 years; a daughter, Ann Elizabeth Higgins of Sandown, N.H.; and a son, Dr. George L. Higgins III and his wife, Cheryl, of Cape Elizabeth. She enjoyed tremendously her six grandchildren, Lisa, Megan, Trisha, Jenny, Jason and Joy. Her five great-grandchildren were a delight.
She was predeceased by a sister, Bernice Orcutt; two brothers, Allan and Richard Faulkingham; as well as a beloved grandson, Jamie L. Higgins.
In compliance with her wishes, there will be no funeral service. Kindly consider Southwest Harbor Library, P.O. Box 157, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679 as the recipient of any heartfelt gifts. There will be an informal memorial celebration 1-3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at their home, 270 Seawall Road. Friends and family are welcome to stop by.
