      Bangor Daily News - 4/10/10

JONESBORO - Guy L. Look, 91, passed away Thursday, April 8, 2010, while residing at Marshall Health Care & Rehabilitation, Machias. He was born Aug. 28, 1918, in Jonesboro, the second son of Leroy and Julia (Grant) Look. His brother, Leyon, died in childhood prior to Guy's birth. Guy was the "baby of the family," raised with older sisters, Harriet, Ada and Helen.

He lived most of his life in the family home overlooking the Chandler River. Guy's education began in a one-room schoolhouse. The public library was a two-mile walk and helped foster a lasting love of reading - particularly Zane Grey novels. He graduated from Jonesboro High School in June 1936. While there he enjoyed being a member of the baseball team. This led to a lifetime enthusiasm for the sport. He also played on the baseball team at Washington State Normal School, Machias, now the University of Maine at Machias, where he graduated in June 1939. Guy's teaching career began with two years at Centerville Elementary School. As the lone instructor for 20 pupils, his initial paycheck was just $16 per week. Next came two years teaching in Milbridge before being transferred to Lubec. Guy taught in Lubec for a total of 18 years - 14 years in the elementary school and four at Lubec High School. He also served as principal for a total of 20 years. Guy retired from his career in education in 1985 while superintendent of SAD 19. Guy was baptized and admitted as a member of Jonesboro Union Church in 1934. As the years went by, he used his talents in service to the church and was a popular interim minister. He also was appointed deacon from 1961 to 1983, and served as a trustee from 1969 to 1984. Guy was quite active in his hometown. He became a member of Jonesboro Grange No. 357 in February 1936 and became a golden chief member in 1987. He held the position of master of the Grange for a time. In March 2007, he was presented with the seals and certificates for his 65th and 70th years of membership. Guy belonged to the National Grange as well. He also served Jonesboro as a member of the board of selectman from 1985 until 1995. Throughout his life, Guy was known as a faith-filled, gentle and quick-witted man. He had fond memories of hunting, sculling and duck decoying, particularly with his father who was a skilled outdoorsman. This led to a deep appreciation for the natural world and a love of animals. After his retirement, he became a devoted caretaker to many cats and a special dog, Muffin.

Guy was predeceased by his parents, siblings; and best friend, Keith Schoppee.

He leaves behind three nieces, Glenace Day, Julia Bridgham and Alicia Norton; many friends, including Christina Geel, Claire Riepe, Kathy Look, Ed White and the Anderson family; longtime friend, Annie B. White; and especially his devoted friend, Jennifer Peavey.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 13, at Jonesboro Union Church, Looks Point Road, Jonesboro, with Pastor John Sprague.

Interment will be afterward at Rose Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jonesboro Union Church. Arrangements are under the care of Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Homes, 220 Court St., Machias. Family and friends may offer their condolences to the Look family by visiting www.bragdonkelley.com.
