JONESBORO - Edward L. White, 85, son of Orrin E. and Ella Floyd White, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, after a long illness.

Edward graduated from Jonesboro High School, class of 1943. This class was comprised of seven boys, all of whom immediately joined the Armed Forces during World War II after graduation and all of whom returned home after the war. After serving in the U.S. Navy, attached to the Marine Corps for three years and participating in the invasion of Japan after the dropping of the atomic bomb Nagasaki, Edward was honorably discharged in August 1946. Edward then enrolled in Washington State Normal School, graduating in 1949. He continued his studies at the University of Maine, Orono, and later received his Certificate of Advanced Study in educational administration from the University of Connecticut. Edward pursued his chosen profession of education for 37 years, teaching students in Bangor and Millinocket, and then moving into administration. He served as assistant superintendent of schools in Keene, N.H., and then served as superintendent of schools in Cromwell, Conn., as well as Eastport and Waterville. Retiring in 1987, he continued to be active in educational policy by serving an appointment to the Governor's Task Force for Education, as chair of Jonesboro Board of Education and Union 102 School Board, a member of Washington Academy Trustee Advisory Committee and received the Educator of the Year award presented by Washington Academy in 2007. In addition to his commitment to educational organizations, Edward was also moderator for Jonesboro Union Church, member of the town budget committee, a life member of National Education Association, Mayflower Society and American Legion Post No. 708.

Edward was predeceased by his parents; a little sister, Dorothy; and two brothers, Orrin Jr. and Stanley.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Anne Feeney White; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Robert Plaisted of Jonesboro; son, Stuart of Cromwell, Conn.; grandsons, Christopher and Matthew Plaisted of Jonesboro; granddaughters, Melanie and Meredith White of Connecticut; great-granddaughters, Madison and Sydney Quicquaro; a brother and sister-in-law, Wilbur and Lanie White of Jonesboro; and a special aunt, Ruth Wood and husband, Percy, of Whiting.

The memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 220 Court St., Machias.

Private interment will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery, Jonesboro.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Edward's memory may be made to Jonesboro Union Church, P.O. Box 144, Jonesboro, ME 04648. Condolences may be shared at www.bragdonkelley.com.
