PLEASANT POINT AND LUBEC - Robert J. Newell Sr., 64, fondly known by his friends as "Joker Joe" or "The Bird," passed away July 30, 2012, after a long illness at Ocean View Nursing Home, Lubec. He was born July 18, 1948, in Pleasant Point, the son the late Josephine Newell and Lewis Dana.
Joker loved hunting and fishing, or just a walk in the woods. His special place was at the spring water in Perry and Split Rock, where he spent a lot of time with his great friends Joe Mitchell and Pinto. He will be missed by all.
His father, Lewis, was killed during the Korean War, and was the son of the late Grace Lewey and Alec Bailey. He was also predeceased by his brother, Arthur B. Newell; and his grandmother, Elizabeth Lacoute. He is survived by his children,
Robert Newell Jr., Bernard Newell and Elizabeth Champagne of East Machias; sister, Anita Sacobie of Kingsclear, New Brunswick; brother, Charles Newell and wife, Susan, of Milltown; sister, Mary Creighton-Parker and husband, Robert M. Parker, of Pleasant Point; and brothers, Leroy J. Newell Sr. and wife, Sally, of Pleasant Point and Roland C. Newell Sr. and wife, Susan. He will be missed by his niece, Pearl Marie McWhorter of Virginia Beach; nephew, William H. Creighton Sr. and his wife, Joely, of Bowdoin. He will also be greatly missed by his hunting buddies - his nephews, Roland C. Newell Jr., Greg Newell and Leroy J. Newell Jr. all of Pleasant Point. He is also survived by many more grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
His family extends a heartfelt thank you to the following: Ocean View Nursing Home, including Margaret and Nathan Brown and staff who all took wonderful care of Joker; to Mary Graham and her husband, Bill, who were there when always needed to transport Joker many times to hospitals in Bangor and Calais; and Tony Nicholas and Roberta Ritcher for all the visits they made to him making his days a little brighter.
Visiting hours will begin Tuesday evening, July 31, at the home of his sister, Mary Creighton-Parker, 55 Bayview Drive, Pleasant Point, and will continue until a Catholic funeral service to celebrate Joker's life 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at St. Anns Church Pleasant Point. Condolences and memories may be shared with Jokers family by visiting his book of memories at www.mcclurefamilyfuneral.com.
