      Text: Matthew was Regent of Scotland. In 1536, he campaigned in Provence for Francois I against Charles V. He was given Henry VIII's niece as a wife and lived in exile in England, invading Scotland with 18 ships as English Lord Lt. of northern England and southern Scotland in 1544. He was forfeited for treason after invading Scotland again in 1545. Matthew burnt the town of Annan in 1547, raided Scotland again in 1548. He was restored in 1564, and became Regent for his grandson, James VI from 1570. He defeated Huntly and the Hamiltons and beseiged Edinburgh Castle in 1571. He was mortally wounded while a prisoner during the attack by Huntly and Lord Claud Hamilton on his Parliament at Stirling, and died after rescue 4 Sept 1571.
