Text: Jeremy Joseph Fry, who died in his sleep, 18 July, 2005, at his home in
Tamil Nadu, India, formely of Widcombe Manor, near Bath was a close
friend of the late Princess Margaret and the Earl of Snowdon, and stood
sponsor at the christening of the couple's son, Viscount Linley.
Fry, member of a landed gentry family, was a company director; one of
his first companies was Rotork Engineering. In recent years he had
lived in India having built a palace in Kerala, he transfered it brick
by brick to Tamil Nadu.
Some controversy surrounded his relationship with Margaret & the then
Antony Armstrong Jones. On 19 March, 1960 Buckingham Palace announced
that Fry was to be best man at the wedding of Armstrong Jones and the
Princess at Westminster Abbey on 6 May. Just a few weeks later, on 6
April 1960, the press revealed that Mr Fry had _stood down_ from the
role as best man. The palace stated that Mr Fry had stood down because
of illness (a recurrence of jaundice), but the real reason was a
conviction at Marlborough Street Magistrates Court, London, in 1952,
for which he was fined £2. He had pleaded guilty to a "minor offence".
Jeremy Fry married Camilla Grinling, an artist, daughter of landscape
painter Geoffrey Grinling, and had 4 children, including sons Francis
and Cosmo Joseph, and a daughter, Polly (born in May 1960). The
marriage ended in divorce in 1967.
Recent reports state that the abovementioned Polly recently had a DNA
test which proved that Lord Snowdon was her father. She was said to
have started to call Snowdon _Pops_, but Fry himself was quoted: _I
have never heard such nonsense_.
In June 2000, he was a guest at the ball at Windsor Castle held to mark
the birthdays of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, Princess Margaret,
the Princess Royal, the Duke of York, and Prince William of Wales.
Fry's son, Cosmo, married in 1982 (div 1986) Lady Cosima Maria
Gabriella Vane-Tempest-Stewart, officially the daughter of the 9th
Marquess of Londonderry, but in reality the daughter of Robin
Douglas-Home (of the Earls of Home) who had been a love of Princess
Margaret before his suicide in the 1960s.
