Text: Edward and his wife were among the English Separatists living in Leiden,
Holland. He then joined the pilgrims at Southhampton, England and then
embarked first in the "Speedwell" and when the ship proved unseaworthy,
transferred to the Mayflower and with his wife and young son, Samuel,
continued the voyage to the New World. He was the twenty-first signer of
the "Compact," and though he and his wife both died soon after their
arrival and are buried in unmarked graves on Coles Hill at Plymouth
County, Massachusetts. He had at least two children; Capt. Matthew, and
Samuel. He was one of the Puritans who left England because of religious
persecution. In the time of Queen Elizabeth I, 1558 to 1603, the policy
was to enforce absolute uniformity in religious belief. The Puritans
were targeted because of their persistent attempts to purify the church
and they had stopped with the ceremonies required by the dominant
religion. King James I, who succeeded Queen Elizabeth I, also was
intolerant of other religions. Edward died during the first winter,
after arriving from the Mayflower in Plymouth, Plymouth Colony,
      Massachusetts.
