Text: Census-taking took a while in 1851. The following information may be of interest to historians and genealogists, who may be surprised to learn as I was, that the 1851 census for Upper and Lower Canada, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia did not commence until January 1852 and was not necessarily completed within that year, thus moving into 1853.

If the question was posed as "age of next birthday" one could find an ancestor born in 1831, shown as age 22 on the census return.

My source of this information is Treasures of the National Archives of Canada (Minister of Supply and Services, 1992) page 242.

We have had a lovely time and I have been on the go every minute. Haven't had time to get only a postcard in here and & there. I got your necktie, had it made to order and it is pretty. Will write again soon. We came to Glasco yesterday. Lena.
