PLEASANT POINT, PERRY - Adelaide T. Newell, 87, passed away Dec. 2, 2005, at Calais Regional Hospital, surrounded by loving family members, after a courageous battle with numerous health problems. She was born Aug. 12, 1918, at Sipayik, Pleasant Point, the daughter of Annie (Ferris) Soctomah and Simon Soctomah, Sr.
Adelaide worked for many years as a fish packer, wreath maker and sweetgrass braider for brown ash basketmakers. Her most serious occupation and dedication was that of a wonderful homemaker and teacher for her children. She was a proud Passamaquoddy woman who embodied her cultural beliefs and values in a gentle and quiet manner. Adelaide always had a warm smile for everyone.
She was predeceased in 1976, by her husband, Aloysious.
She is survived by her four children, Susan Barrera and husband, Santiago, of Wichita Falls, Texas, Wayne Newell and wife, Sandra, of Indian Township, Philip Newell of Indian Township and Martina Fortin and husband, Herman, of Sipayik, Pleasant Point; Adelaide is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Relatives and Friends are invited to take part in Adelaide's wake which will be held at the home of Martina and Herman Fortin, 49 Thunder Rd., Wabanaki Place, Sipayik, Pleasant Point, 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, to 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, when a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Sipayik, Pleasant Point, with the Rev. Eugene Gaffey, the Rev. Frank Morin, Deacons George Stevens and Frances Nicholas officiating. Adelaide will be buried at the Tribal Cemetery at Sipayik, Pleasant Point.
