  • ID: I1570
  • Name: William C. (Buttram) EDMONDS
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: ABT 1832 in TN TN NC
  • Death: 21 MAR 1889 in Magazine, Logan, Arkansas
  • Note:
He's indexed as William "O" Edmonds in the Civil War Pension file . Catherine Buttram collected widow's benefits.
Certificate #338264 available at NARA (Pennsylvania Ave entrance). Need to register and get a badge to get into the big room to see the file. It's a 3-hour process sometimes (if you hit the pull times good). Or else you wait.

    1840 RHEA CO, TN
    Edmonds, Penelope
    1 male 5-9 (William C (1831)) ? Is this him????
    1 male 15-19
    1 female 10-14
    1 female 15-19
    1 female 30-39 (not born 1897?)

1850: Rhea Co, TN (TWO CONSECUTIVE CENSUSES WITH PENELOPE leads me to believe she's his mother or less likely, his grandmother if one of her boys or daughters brought home a baby)
Penelope Edmonds 53 <1797> North Carolina
    William C Edmonds 19
    William A Kelly 12

((Newton's mother also? or sister-in-law?????) ((see if she also has son named Madison <1829> living with John Collins family 11/13 in Rhea.))
    AND in the 1860 is
    Mathew 31 with little
George Edmonds 5 in the Bramlett household and George is still there in 1870.
(Neither Madison or Mathew are ever seen again)

(Eliza Crow on page 3/7 in 1850. William is on page 5/7. She alledgedly died after Newton J. Edmonds was born in 1854 or in 1855.) NO, I have no documentation but that's what Catherine Butram's brothers listed in an affidavit for her claim to widow's benefits on William's Civil War service. Would appreciate all help. Thanks.

THIS IS ALL I HAVE ON THIS FAMILY. I was trying to disprove him for as a son of a different family and I did.
I did not pursue him further after I looked through his Civil War Pension file. Well, maybe just a little, but not seriously.

He's the son of William and his first wife, Eliza Crow. Catherine Buttram's brothers wrote in her pension app that Eliza died shortly after birth of Newton.

    Wm C.
In Catherine's application for this Civil War Pension (widow's benefits) she stated he died March 21, 1889 of pneumonia in Magazine, Logan, Arkansas. See find-a-grave at

Oh, now I see who you copied from. Catherine is still alive on the 1900 & 1910 censuses with Callie and probably the 1920 in Oklahoma
