    Elijah first owned a farm up on what was called "The Flatla nds", locatedabout 4 miles west of Butterfield, Missouri. H e owned a molasses orsorghum mill. People in the neighborho od grew cane and hauled it toElijah to make them some maola sses to eat.
    Elijah and Mary Frances Metcalf must have been a very carin g andcompassionate couple.
    After some of their girls married and lost their husbands b y death ordivorce, they kept their little ones until the gi rls could take care ofthem.
    Elijah bought a farm in Thomas Hollow 4 miles west of Exete r, Missouri.This farm had a wonderful spring coming out o f a big bluff about 10ft.high. Elijah put about a 2 in. pip e into the spring, where the water wascoming out from betwe en the rocks, where you could hang it bucket on thepipe uni l the bucket filled with water. This spimg was the head o f acreek that never ran dry called "Mike's Creek".
    Eliah had a 2 room house, 2 stories high. Then a screened i n porch acrossthe east side of the house. There was als o a nice porch the length of thehouse on the west facing th e road.
    He had a rock cellar back of the house that was close a blu ff. His barnwas south of the house. The spring branch ra n a short distance from thebarn.
    The farm Elijah owned in Thomas Hollow had plenty of timbe r on it, whichwas a good place for hunting and fishing. Eli jah kept 2 or 3 big dogs forhunting.
    On January 24, 1946 Elijah Metcalf passed away. He was buri ed on his farmin Thomas Hollow in a little graveyard for th e Metcalf family.
