Willene Short FUQUAY, 95, passed away Monday, Jan 5, 2009. Throughout her long life, Willene touched the lives and hearts of many as she shared their joys and sorrows and encouraged them to experience the good and the beautiful around them. She was born in Mangum, Okla., and was the second of three daughters born to W. T. and Clara SHORT. When Willene was two, the family moved to Shawnee, where Professor SHORT taught mathematics at Oklahoma Baptist University until his death. She graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1934 with a Bachelors in Biology. She also held a Masters degree in Art Education from Oklahoma University (1937) and a Masters degree in Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (1940).

She married Murray FUQUAY on Aug. 2, 1939, and they remained life partners until he died in 1994. In Spring 1945 Willene and Murray moved to Midwest City, where he served as pastor of the First Baptist Church for 25 years. She took seriously her calling as a pastor's wife. She loved serving her church, and was still teaching a sunday school class well after her 90th birthday. She found joy in doing for others. As a teacher and caring friend, she brought happiness and inspiration to the lives of many. In addition to leadership in many church activities, she was active in the Premier Book Club, MidDel Art Guild, the number one Study Club of Midwest City, and water exercise classes at Rose State College. For five years she served as a mentor for a medical student in a program sponsored by the Department of Geriatric Medicine in The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. She was an artist who loved the beauty of God's world. She created more than 200 paintings, many in her 90th decade. Her paintings hang in churches, Oklahoma Baptist University offices, businesses and homes. She taught art at Oklahoma Baptist University from 1943-45 and taught private art lessons to groups in her home. For many years, she captivated children with her chalk talks and story telling.
