Both he and his wife Marion H oag Allen took greatinterest in collecting and recording the family genealogy and localhistor y. It is because of their diligent work that much of the earlyfamily history was preserved . Lewis was also a collector of Indianartufacts, many of which were found on his farm.

Lewis F. was a farmer and stayed on the family homestead, first purchasedby his grandfather , George S. Allen in 1848. He joined the FarmingtonGrange at age 14 in 1889 and was an activ e member for 73 years; served asMaster of the Grange several times; and recieved the Master F armer Awardin 1935. He was a charter member of the Farm Bureau.

Civic duty was also part of Lewis F. Allen's life. He served asFarmington Town Assessor fo r 30 years (1909-1916 and 1930-1955). In hispublic service he followed the example of his fa ther and grandfather.

He was a farmer interested in making farming better and crops moreabundant. He oftened teste d seed corn and maintained records of theresults. He was one who enjoyed having test plots f or potatoes whichmeant careful records and often hand planting and harvesting. Sheep werehi s pride and joy. He maintained flocks of sheep for many years. Oftenhe could be seen goin g cross lots to the barn on the west road, carryinga lantern, to tend to the sheep at lambin g time. Frequently a lamb washoused in the kitchen in a crate for a few days if the mother c ould notcare for twins or would not "own" her lamb. Various children thus gaineda lamb fo r a pet.
