Note: The Queens of Ramesses II
        Istnofret
Though Nefertari is by far Ramesses II's most famous queen, Istnofred (Isisnofret) had consid erable importance within the court. She was, early on, the second principle wife, and may ha ve been closer to Nefertari in importance then what we know. It is very possible that the tw o queens had similarly important responsibilities, with Istnofred domain being northern or Lo wer Egypt.

While there is little doubt that Nefertari was probably Ramesses II's favorite and most power ful wife, it was Istnofret who bore Ramesses II his most important sons, including his succes sor, Merenptah, and the well known and loved Khaemwese, High Priest of the Temple of Ptah a t Memphis.

Furthermore, after the death of Nefertari, Istnofret became Ramesses II's "Great Royal Wife" , becoming his chief queen. We believe this was in year 24 or 25 of Ramesses II's reign, an d she remained his chief wife until her death. We are not sure at what point she died. Perhap s she lived less then ten years after the death of Nefertari, but we do know that she precede d Ramesses II to the grave. Istnofret's tomb has never been found, though it is probably on t he West Bank at Luxor.

        19th Dynasty
Istnofret was the second ranked wife of Ramesses II and had several sons and daughters. She g ave birth to Merneptah, Ramesses' heir, Prince Khaemweset, and Bint-Anath along with others . Istnofret replaced Queen Nefertari at some point after the dedication of the temples at Ab u Simbel. What happened to Nefertari is not known for sure, she may have died or retired. Ist nofret disappeared from record not long after. She may have died or retired to the harem encl ave near the Fayoum region.
