Susannah Emory was a quarter-blood Cherokee.

"Judge John Martin's mother, Susannah Emory, was one-quarter Cherokee. H er maternal grandfather was a Scotsman named Ludovic Grant, who arrived i n South Carolina in 1716 as a prisoner of war of the British. After ser vice his indenture, Grant became a trader among the Cherokee, married a C herokee woman, and lived in the Cherokee Nation for the rest of his lif e. His daughter married a white man named William Emory. Their daughter , Susannah, was married three times: first to Capt. John Stuart, then t o Richard Fields, and finally to Jack Martin, all white men. Children f rom all three marriages proved to be leaders among the Cherokee.

INFORMATION TAKEN FROM "GENEOLOGY OF OLD AND NEW CHEROKEE FAMILIES" BY G EORGE MORRISON BELL, SR.

HISTORY OF THE CHEROKEE INDIANS" E. STARR PAGE 466-467

JOHN STUART WAS STATIONED AT FORT LOUDON AS THE CAPTAIN OF A BRITISH CO MPANY IN 1757. THE FORT WAS BESIEGED AND CAPTURED BY THE WAR CHIEF, O-G O-NO-STO-TA ON AUGUST 7, 1760. NEARLY ALL OF THE GARRISON WAS KILLED BU T CAPTAIN STUART WAS RESCUED AND TAKEN TO VIRGINIA BY THE CIVIL CHIEF,A A TACULLACULLA. STUART WAS LATER APPOINTED SUPERINTENDENT OF INDIAN AFFAI RS, SOUTH OF OHIO RIVER AND MARRIED SUSANNAH EMORY AND THIER ONLY CHILD W AS ALWAYS KNOWN AS OO-NO-DU-TU OR BUSHYHEAD AND THIS NAME HAS CLUNG TO H IS DESCENDANTS.

CAPTAIN STUART HIMSELF WAS KNOWN TO HIS CHEROKEE AQUAINTANCES AS OO-NO- DU-TU ON ACCOUNT OF HIS SHOCK OF BLOND HAIR. HE DIED AT PENSACOLA, FLA. F EB. 21, 1779.

SUSANNAH'S SECOND HUSBAND WAS RICHARD FIELDS, AND ENGLISHMAN AND HER TH IRD HUSBAND WAS BRIGADIER GENERAL JOSEPH MARTIN, WHO HAD A RARE DISTINC TION OF
SIMULTANEOUJSLY BEARING COMMISSIONS TO THIS RANK IN THE MILITRIA SERVIC E OF VIRGINIA AND NORTH CAROLINA.
    ____________________________
    Counter Argument:
It would be socially impossible for Richard Fields, a proud Englishman, t o go to John Stuart, a proud Scotsman, with this plan if Stuart had fat hered a child by the wife of Fields. It just would not happen. This i s one of the more convincing facts toward proving that there were two S usannah Emorys.

          • Note:
John Stuart, "father of the Cherokees" One of the most widely known and a dmired persons in the province of South Carolina during the decade prec eding the American revolution was Captain John Stuart, a descendant of S cotland's Royal line. Although an untitled private gentleman, he became t he Royal Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Southern Districts of N orth America in 1762 largely because of the most amazing example of fri endship between an Indian and a white man ever recorded. He would meet a nd become the blood-brother of Attakullakulla, (The Little Carpenter), t he beloved Peace Chief of the Cherokee Nation. There was a sincere aff ection between these men that endured for their lifetime. Although he h ad no previous experience with Indians Stuart was attracted to their wa y of life and was readily accepted by the fierce mountain people. A num ber of Cherokee warriors accompanied General Oglethorpe when he invaded e ast Florida in 1740 and had witnessed the bravery of the kilted warrior s from over the sea, as they battled the Spanish with their deadly broa dswords at Fort Mosa. The Cherokee admired the Highland Scots whom they c onsidered fellow warriors. Some purists may be dismayed at this but it i s a fact the two races had much in common. Both were mountain people wi th proud, independent, warrior societies who gloried in a good fight, r ough games and reckless living. Both were clan societies which consider ed loyalty to the clan their first obligation. An Indian's insistence o n vengeance for the killing of a member of his clan was perfectly under stood by an 18th century Highlander with a similar custom. The Scottish M artinmas Fair held each fall, was almost identical to the Cherokee Gree n Corn Busk, also held each fall. Cherokees passed a newly born child t hrough the smoke of a fire to purify it and the Scots had an identical c ustom. The Scots were so compatible with the Indians that after 1750 ne arly all the traders among the southern Indians were Highland Scots. Be cause of his ability to get along with the Indians Stuart handled all l iaison with them and traded for provisions for the garrison. On January 5 , 1762, Stuart was appointed Royal Superintendent of Indian Affairs for t he Southern Districts of North America. Stuart held office for 18 years , during which he had a harmonious relationship with the Commanders in C hief and Ministers under whom he worked. At a time when many Royal offi cials considered their office mainly as a means to advance their own fo rtunes. Stuart's tenure was one of the few bright spots of the English a dministration of her American colonies. He was a consummate diplomat an d truly devoted to his savage charges, their welfare was always his for emost concern. The southern Indians in turn loved and trusted their "Be loved Father," a title of great respect given him by the Cherokees.

While serving at Loudoun - according to Cherokee legend - Stuart took a C herokee maiden, Susannah Emory, as his consort. Susannah was the three q uarter white, grand daughter of Cherokee trader Ludovic Grant, a transp orted Jacobite taken at Preston in 1715 and sent to South Carolina to s erve a 7 year indenture. Susannah had a son by Stuart who was called Oo -no-dutu (Bushyhead) as Stuart was , because of his shock of bushy, red -gold hair, typical of the Stuarts. This son, known only by his Indian n ame, remained among the Indians and married Nancy Foreman, the daughter o f a Scottish trader and a Cherokee woman. They had a son who was called J esse Bushyhead and he became the progenitor of a long line of Bushyhead s.

The state of Franklin refused to return to North Carolina, and in M arch elected members of a legislature, which in turn elected John Sevie r as governor, appointed county officers, etc., and appointed William C ocke as delegate to the Congress of the United States. Attempts were ma de to secure the cooperation of the part of Virgina lying west of the m ountains, but the
Virginia Assembly pronounced the plan treasonable. Thrice during th e year it was reported that the Franklinites were negotiating for the i ncorporation of the Cherokee Indians in the State of Franklin, but not a ll the chiefs would agree.
In November, 1785, the State of Franklin adopted a Constitution." [ pg. 2067]

"May 3. The singstunde was attended by Col. Joseph Martin, who spen t the night here on his way to Charleston where he and other Commission ers are to consider the affairs of the Indians. He told us that the Che rokees on the
Tennessee River often speak of the visit of Br. Martin Schneider, a nd seem to wish that he would come again and stay with them; but that t his would not be wise just now when there are certain misunderstandings b etween them and the white people. He confirmed the report that some tim e ago the western counties of this State had cut themselves off and ass umed the name of Franklin, had elected their own Governor and other sta te officials, and now had sent a representative to Congress to try to s ecure recognition as a separate State. Whether this State will agree to t he division or will oppose
it strongly is as yet most uncertain." [pg. 2080]
