January 24, 18 35. Uncle John was a gentleman of native intellect and cult ivated mind. Upon his marriage, his father gave him his Cla rk's Run estate, four miles west of Washington, Ky. Here h e lived in the indulgence of his literary tastes and hospit able nature until 1833, when his reduced fortunes require d him to sell. He then removed to his wife's property on Mi ll Creek. He was at times intemperate, but during the latte r years of his life he refrained from liquor, and seldom le ft home. He was a Democrat in politics, and though his part y was in a decided minority in the County, yet his persona l popularity, on one occasion, came very near electing hi m to the Legislature. His information was varied, his readi ng general and his judgment sound. He read every book tha t came in his way. His proficiency in history, philosophy , politics any other branches of information, made him an i nteresting and instructive companion; but from indolence, h is capabilities were never improved, so as to raise him t o distinction. His brilliant talents and independent fortun e caused him to prepare for no profession, and the man tha t might have adorned the bench, the bar or the legislativ e forum, spent his life in privacy.
