A History of the Valley of Virginia by Samuel Kercheval ,originally published in 1850, now being reproduced with an index ,for sale on line. Below are the highlights of this book; Tradition related that the Southern Indians exterminated a tribe, called the Senedos, on the North fork of the Shenandoah River, at present the residence of William Steenbergen, Esq. in the County of Shenandoah, Virginia. About the year, 1734, Benjamin Allen, Riley Moore, and William White, settled in this neighborhood. Benjamin Allen settled on the beautiful estate called Allen's Bottom. Benjamin, Riley and William removed from Monocacy, in Maryland, and settled on the North Branch of the Shenandoah, now in the County of Shenandoah about 12 miles South of present day Woodstock. Many of these settlers came over with William Penn's invitation. Sam Kerchevel lived at a time when many of the old settlers children were still alive to tell him of the old country. In the year 1764, a party of 18 Delaware's crossed the mountains. One party of 8 moved on to Cedar Creek settlement. the other 10 went to attack the people in the neighborhood of the residence Major John White. On this place, Dr. [Robert] White, the ancestor of the White family, had settled, and on his land a stockade was erected. The people in the neighborhood had taken the alarm and were on their way to the fort. Many did not make it and were slaughtered. The author has received from Major Jon White of Frederick, another account of the foregoing outrages; In July 1763, information was received by the late Major Robert White [ who had a small fort around his house as an asylum for the people of the neighborhood], that the Indians had been seen. etc etc. Robert White married Margaret Hoge, daughter of William, of the same neighborhood. * In the year 1768, Capt. William White, a brave and active Indian fighter, made a visit to Col. William Crawford, who had removed and settled at the Meadows in the Allegheny Mountains. White lived on Cedar Creek and Crawford lived on Bull-Skin. * Sometime after the British of the American Revolution, left Phila, PA, the exiles employed the late Alexander White, Esq. a lawyer near Winchester, for which they paid him one hundred pounds in Virginia currency, in gold coin, to go to Phila and negotiate with the executive authority of the State to permit them to return to their families and friends. In which negotiation White succeeded, and to the great joy and heartfelt satisfaction of these captives, the returned to their native homelands. ******* You may want to go to your local library reference desk and ask if they can get you a copy on inter-library loan of Pioneer of Old Frederick County Virginia, by Cecil O'Dell, 195, Walsworth Publishing Co. Marceline, MO.Look at pp 464-466. This is about your White family. Probably others in this book you will eventfully connect to. They may have a copy of the above book available for inter-library loan too? Below are the highlights of this story: William White stated in the Hite-Fairfax lawsuit that was present with Benjamin Borden gave a bond guaranteeing a good title to land on Smith Creek which had been bought by John Dobbin on 24 Sept 1735. [William was caught up in this lawsuit. ] White received a patent from the Colony for 400 acres on North River Shenandoah at the mouth of Smith Creek on 29 June 1739 [ Virginia Land Patent Book 18, p 295]. This tract is located on present day U.S. Hwy 11 at South Jackson, Virginia and includes Mt Jackson Cemetery. William received a 410 acres 1739 patent land located on Smith Creek adj south of his 400 acres patent land on 21 July, 1749 [ Gray, Northern Neck Grants, G-240]. U.S. Hwy 11 crosses the west corner of the tract today. White was "now " living on this tract when it was surveyed on 19 April, 1749 [ Joyner, Northern Neck Warrants and Surveys, Augusta Co VA. Vol 1, p 33] The 410 acres was part of Benjamin Borden's 3300 acre tract, which Borden had purchased from McKay, Hite, Duff and Green. White received another Fairfax grant of 4 Feb 1749/50. This grant land contained 598 acres and was located east of the 1739, 400 acre tract and east of the 1749 tract. Shenandoah Hwy 730 forms the southwest property line today and Mt Airy is located within the tract. William and his wife, Rose ___ White sold 200 acres of the 598 acres tract to William Moore 3 June 1754. They sold 205 acres to Jackson Allen 20 Dec 1759. On the same day William White Sr. sold 238 acres of this 400 patent land to his son, Joseph White for 50 pounds. His wife, Rose, had evidently died sometime in 1760 since she was listed on the 20 Dec 1759 land sale but wasn't on the 2 Nov 1760 land sale. William White born ca 1700, was deceased by 7 May, 1766 when his will dated 29 Aug 1765 was proved in Frederick Co VA Court. He listed his wife Sarah [ nee Bonds I am told but not proved?] and daughter, Susannah White. He bequeathed to sons by Rose ; William and Wesley White. Witnesses were Joseph Allen, Thomas Whitson and Joseph Denton. [ Frederick Co VA Will Book 3, p 335] William and Rose were also the parents of Ruth White born 28 Feb, 1732, Charity born 6 March, 1734 and Benjamin born 11 Jan 1738 [Baptism Records of Reverend Stoever, compiled by Rudelle Mills Davis and Peggy Davidson Dick, on the Allen, Bird, Dobbin, Moore, and White families. Book located at the Handley Library, Winchester, VA. or to purchase from Rudelle Davis, 384 Clermont Court, El Paso, TX. 79912] Benjamin White was deceased by 170 when his will was proved in Frederick Co VA Court. He listed his wife, Elizabeth ,and younger brothers; Josiah [Joseph] and Whisley [Westley]. {Frederick Co VA Will Book 11, pp 173, 425. Joseph White sold his 238 acres tract in two sections: to Burr Harrison on 2 Sept 1766 and Charles Taylor on 4 Nov 1766. [Frederick Co VA Deed Book 11, pp 173, 254] Westley White and his wife, Mary, sold 391 acres which he had inherited from his father, William White Sr. to Abraham Brewbaker on 2 Aug 1769 [ibid, Book 13, p 116] This 391 acre legacy contained 227 acres of the 598 acre Fairfax land and 164 acres of the 400 acres 1739 patent land. A Westley White owned land on Taylor's Bend in Jefferson Co TN by 1783 [ Ramsey's Annals of TN, p 277, J.G. Ramsey]. William White Jr was deceased by 24 Nov 1772 when his will dated 18 May 1771 was proved in Shenandoah County Court, VA. He listed his wife, Nancy [Ann] nee Britton] and daughters; Mary and Elizabeth. He bequeathed land on Smith Creek to sons, James, William and Brittain and listed sons; John and Benjamin. William appointed his wife, Ann, and Joseph Allen to serve as executors. Ann White was deceased by 20 Dec 1779 when the Shenandoah County VA Court appointed John Jones as administrator of her estate [Shenandoah County, Virginia Will Book A, pp 20, 234, 294] James White sold 67 acres [part of the 410 acre Fairfax grant land, to Anderson Moffett on 27 Aug 1783 [Shenandoah County VA Court Deed Book C, pp 553, 556] This land was willed to James by his father, William White Jr.Brittain White of Shenandoah County and Benjamin White of Greene Co NC [became TN] sold his inherited land from their father to Jacob Moore on 30 Dec 1790 [ibid Book H, p 36] William White III and his wife, Esther [Antrim] sold his inherited land on 29 Mar 1796 [ibid, Book H, p 36, Book K, p 328] to William Steenberger . A William White [a carpenter and the son of William White, deceased, of Sussex Co Delaware,] sold two tracts of land to Francis Woof on 13 and 20 Oct. 1730 [ Sussex Co DE Deed Book 6, pp 291, 391] [We do not know if or how this William White is related]. He just owned land in the same section at the same time as above White family]. William White born Jan 10, 1755 Prince William Co area that became in 1759 Fauquier Co VA. He was Rev War soldier [S1735 VA] William relocated -after Rev War -to Reedy & Muddy Creek area of northern Rowan Co- portion that became Stokes Co- and lived there for 30 years before moving to Lincoln Co TN where he died May 6, 1833. Some of his children by his second wife, Elizabeth ___ born 1775 NC were born in Stokes Co. They were; Martha b 1814 NC ; James Franklin b Aug 10, 1816 NC; Carr Bailey b Jan 18, 1818 at Stokes Co NC per his obit in Giles Co TN. Their last child, William Clark White was born Aug 8, 1820 in Lincoln Co TN- he was my direct line ancestor after above two William White's - Sr & Jr. On 1800 Salisbury Rowan Co census he is listed; William White males 0-0-1-1 & females 3-2-0-1 I have looked for his first wife that D.A.R. accepted as Mary ___ and William White's children.I believe that I have found two of the daughters in above 1800 census; 1. Edith Chapman White born July 10, 1792 married Aug 14, 1814 Stokes Co NC to James Tucker. They are both buried in Lincoln Co TN 2. Hannah White married Aug 30, 1812 Stokes Co NC to William Ledford. They seemed to have remained in Stokes Co NC and raised their family there. Edith and Hannah probably would have been the 2 females 5-10 years old in 1800 census. There are three daughters missing that were less than 5 years old in 1800 and 1 son age 10-20 missing. Can anyone give me any clues as to who they might have been. Usually the children of the first marriage carry the family names that help further research. I have found the will of the father of William White b 1755, Pr Wm/Fauquier Co VA He was William White Sr. died ca 1797 Haymarket, Prince William Co VA. His Will was finally probated in 1804 in Fauquier Co VA. William White Sr is listed in 1761 Roster of Virginia Troops out of Fauquier Co VA under Capt William Edmonds. [ Did he get land in Mason Co KY for his service? On Mason Co KY genealogy site I note many living there from Fauquier and some living in Fauquier Co still trying to sell land they own in Mason Co KY.] His second wife, widow Ann [James Bailey ]White inherited estate until her death or remarriage. She prob died in 1816 when the farm was sold to neighbor William Hunton. William White and widow Ann Bailey had no issue. She married later in life. The children of William White Sr and wife Mary ___ were; 1. Jemima married Jan 10, 1791 to George Greene Waddell 2. John White md Jan 7, 1783 Ann {Nannie] Bailey [He was RW soldier]3. William born Jan 10, 1755 married 1st Mary, md 2nd Ann Bailey, widow of James 4. Elizabeth md Feb 28, 1786 James Bailey Sr. 5. Nancy Ann md Oct 31, 1786 William Waddell Sr 6. Hannah md Dec 13, 1787 Thomas Russell James 7. Sarah md Aug 25, 1789 George Roach. They remained in Prince Wm. Co VA. George was the administrator of his father in law's estate until his own death in 1824. 8. Carr md Feb 19, 1795 Nancy Donaldson, dau of John. All of above births and marriages were in Fauquier Co VA. All but William and Sarah had relocated to Mason Co KY by 1800. They all sent legal authorization for George Roach to sell their share of William White Sr's estate. I have copies of those legal documents and all but two marriage applications. Carr was under age and required his father to sign for him with his X. :**:.~* Ginny *~.:**:. Email: URL: URL title: Note: Mrs. Dietrich of College Park, Maryland was accepted in D.A.R. on William White and wife Mary ____. She descended from William's daughter, Hannah, who married Thomas Russell James. She stated that there were records in Maryland Archives about this family. I wrote but evidently not to correct place as they did not have them. I suspect it was a genealogical society near her home in Maryland? William White md 2nd Ann Bailey, widow of James Bailey. Children of James and Ann; Thomas eldest, Ann, William, and Nannie William White was made guardian of Ann Bailey's children. James , deceased, and Ann Bailey's daughter, Ann Bailey, married John White, son of William and Mary White. William White died ca Oct 1804 at Haymarket, Prince William Co VA. I have a copy of his will. He mentions Ann as his wife. Ann fought to keep the will from being probated completely until 1825. William had left her the estate as long as she was his widow. For some reason, William White Jr was named in his will to be given 1 shilling and never no more, nor to his heirs. This was a question as to the mental condition of William White Sr when he died and whether he even made out a will of not. They thought perhaps Ann [Bailey] White's son, Thomas, made out the will and cut William out of it??? We will never know. William White Sr's son in law, George Roach , husband of Sarah White, lived in Prince Wm Co VA at least from 1804 to abt 1823 and was executor of William White Sr's will until his death. William White Jr was living on Reedy Creek, old Rowan Co NC located at upper center near the border among Moravians. Several of them relocated to Lincoln Co TN just before the 1820 census as William White Jr did. William White Jr died in May 1833 in Lincoln Co TN. He filed for his RW pension in 1832 and it was approved and began the year he died, 1833. I have never been able to find the first wife and children of William White Jr. He stated in his RW pension application that "on his person he had proof that ahe was born Jan 10, 1755 at Fauquier Co VA [It actually was still PRince William Co until 1759 but he must have been concerned about rocking the boat so he listed what he knew his birth place to be called in 1832 when he filed. William White Jr md 2nd Elizabeth ____ b 1775 NC. Wm was ag! e 58 when their first child was born and all the children by law were still minors when he died. Had to be a first family prob married at end of RW in VA?? She probably died ca 1812 in NC?? I have reason to consider Edith Chapman White b ca 1797 NC married James Tucker in NC and raised their children in Lincoln Co TN to be a child of William White Jr's first marriage. No proof. Edith and James named a son William White Tucker. Their dau. Nancy Tucker Pylant named a son, William White Pylant and lived next door to a son of William White Jr in Lincoln Co TN. I considered that William White Jr may have married a Chapman but have not located any proof of that. There was a William White who died at Battle of Brandywine and had a brother, John White, who obtained the bounty land due to his brother William. That William married a Chapman but was not my William who died in Lincoln Co TN in 1833. At the time William White Sr died, all of his children except Sarah and William lived in Mason Co KY. I "think" they lived on bounty land given to their father?? There was a John White, age 78, Rev War soldier, still living in 1840 in northern Mason Co KY with Caleb White, son?? All the children lived in Mason Co KY at least from 1804 to abt 1820. John came back to Virginia before or shortly after his father died. Evidently he returned to Mason Co KY later? Needs more work. I would like to find bounty papers for William White Sr in Mason Co KY. Probably called Ohio Territory then like Thomas White's land was that he received in Licking OH for his service. William White Sr was lised in 1761 roster of Capt Wm. Edmonds VA Troops out on Fauquier Co. That would have been Fr & Indian War. He also contributed to soldiers in that war per records.

Most of you have seen my queries for many years asking for clues trying to locate the parents of my earliest proven ancestor, William White. In his Rev War pension application {S1735 VA] filed in 1832 from Lincoln Co TN, he stated that on his person he had proof that he was born Jan. 10, 1755 at Fauquier Co VA. [We know it was still called Prince William Co until 1759but he must have known that too and did not want to rock the boat in getting his pension so listed the current name of where he was born]. A wonderful lady from Fauquier Co sent me the information of where to find his will. A wonderful lady sent me the information that Woodruff Drawers in Fauquier Co Virginia's Loose Papers had the Will of William White Sr. I had thought this same William White Sr was the father of my William but all the papers stating his children's names never included a son, William White Jr. I thought that odd as all large families named a son after the father. ********** William White,Will, October.1804, Fauquier Co Probate Box 40, 1823-002 In the name of God, Amen! I, William White Sr., of Fauquier County, being very sick and weak and of perfect mind and memory thanks be to God, calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men to die, do make and ordain, this my last will and testament. That is to say, principally and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it, and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent, Christian burial, and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life, I give, demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form. First, I give and bequeath to Ann, my dearly beloved wife, all my estate so long as she liveth or widowhood, and at her death or marriage, it is mydesire that all of my estate should be sold and equally divided amongst the seven children named; John White, BEtty White, Nancy White, Sally White, Carr White, Hanna White and Mima White. N.B. if any should be dead, the money to be divided amongst the living children. And my son, William White, I give and bequeath one shilling Virginia currency & never no more of my Estate nor his heirs. I give and bequeath to my son, John White, a Negro girl named Fanny/Janny? and all her increase as a legacy left him & his heirs forever. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this seventh day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety six. William White + Sr. Crop? Signed, sealed, published, pronounced and declared by the said Wm. White Senr. as his last will and Testament in the presence of us, who in his presence and in the presence of each other, have hereunto subscribed our names. Thomas Bailey Elijah Robinson Abner George ************** William White is listed in D.A.R. by a lady from College Park, Maryland many years ago. She stated his wife's name was Mary ___. This lady was named as the mother of his children named in the will and Ann was his second wife. Ann was widow of James Bailey. I am unsure of who this James Bailey was.Perhaps a son of Carr Bailey Sr?? William White Sr and wife Mary ___? Children; 1. Elizabeth Ann died after May 23, 1816, married Feb. 28, 1786 Fauquier Co VA to James Bailey [whose son was he?] 2. Jemima/Mima died after May 23, 1816, married 1st Jan 10, 1791 Fauquier Co VA to George Greene Waddell. Mima md 2nd in Mason Co KY to Stephen Wade abt 1847. 3. William White Jr. born 10 Jan 1755, married first _____ [possibly in 1787 to Lettice? ], md 2nd in NC to Elizabeth ____ born 1775. They relocated to Lincoln Co TN about 1819 and both died there. William was Rev War soldier above listed. [my direct line] 4. John White born ca 1758, died aft. May 22, 1816, married his father's widow, Ann [Bailey] White. John was also Rev War soldier and mentioned in his brother William White's pension application. I have not located his pension application. 5. Nancy born 1764, died aft May 22, 1816. Nancy married Oct 31, 1786 Fauquier Co VA to William Waddell Sr. 6. Hannah born ca 1765, died 1840 in Clay Co KY. Married Dec 13, 1787 Fauquier Co VA to Thomas Russell James. 7. Sarah born ca 1768, died aft May 16, 1816 to George Roach. They were living in Prince William Co VA when her father died. 8. Carr born ca 1777, died aft May 16, 1816. Married Feb 19, 1795 to Nancy Donaldson, dau. of John.I have a copy of most of these children's marriages. All first marriages were in Fauquier Co VA. William White Jr was living on Reedy Creek in Stokes Co NC section that was called Rowan Co NC when his father died. Sarah Roach was living in Prince William Co VA as stated above when her father died and her husband, George Roach, handled the inventory of William White Sr'sestate in 1804 with William White's neighbor, William Hunton. May 22, 1816, George Roach received legal authorization from all of the of her children who were then living in Mason Co KY. I believe that Mason Co KY land was bounty land for William White Sr but have not found it listed yet. William Roach lived next door to William White Sr's land and purchased it from the estate. *** Interesting fact; Haymarket District Court 31st of October, 1804, Fauquier County, Virginia This last will and testament of William White Send. deceased, was presented and proven by the oaths of Thomas Bailey and Abner George, witnesses thereto. The 1st November, 1804 George Roach Plaintiff against Ann White Upon a motion to reject admitting to record the will of William White dec'd which was yesterday proved by two subscribing witnesses, it is ordered by the Court that the said will be admitted to record. 2nd November, 1804 Administration with the will annexed is granted unto Ann White of the Estate of William White deceased. William Hunton Sr, Owen Thomas, Wililam Ball and Thomas Hunton or any three of them being first are appointed to appriase the Estaate of the said William White and return the appraisement to the Court. Teste I. [?] Lawson, C.D.C. A copy Teste M.B. Sinclair, Clk of Prince William County Superior Court, Virginia *** The will was finally completely probated in 1825. John White, son of William White Sr and his first wife, Mary __?, married his father's 2nd wife, the widow, Ann Bailey. She was John's step mother. There is no mention of why William White Sr. disinherited his son, William White Jr. William White Jr was at court when the White children had to force their step mother, Ann [Bailey] White to probate the will so they would get their share. I assume he finally did receive an inheritance but can't be positive. If not, why did he bother going back to Fauquier Court hearings? In the 1840 book of Soldiers still alive and receiving war pensions, there is a John White, age 82, living with Caleb White in northern division of Mason Co KY. John did receive a RW pension but I do not recognize him in the John White pensioners in the RW pensioners books I have. William White stated his brother, John, enlisted under same Capt Shelton that William did. He said John was camped at Alexandria when William was on his way home after his own tour ended. He found John too ill to continue and took John's place for a few weeks. John caught up and resumed his place on a march to Williamsburg, VA. William White re-enlisted in the army later but paidsomeone to finish his second tour just before the end of the war due to ill health of William White. I have no idea of the maiden name of Ann Bailey, widow of James. Nor of who James Bailey was. Then there is William White Sr's daughter, Elizabeth White who married James Bailey Feb 28, 1786 in Fauquier Co VA. Who was this James Bailey? Any help appreciated. Ginny Keefer

Rev War soldier, William White, who stated in his RW pension application that he was born Jan 10, 1755 " at Fauquier Co VA", even though it was officially still called Prince Wm. Co until 1759. I have read books about Lancaster Co VA families and noticed that so many of those surnames appear later in Fauquier Co records. I suggest those who of you who are still searching for parentage too, take a look at Lancaster Co records. Thomas White born ca 1670, perhaps in Scotland?, died abt 1721 in Lancaster Co VA. There are several references to Thomas being a clerk to Monsharst and Clayton in the Library of Virginia. Yes, Elizabeth was a daughter of my direct line, William White Sr and wife Mary. William White Sr fought in French & Indian War under Capt. William Edmonds out of Fauqueir Co VA. He is listed in 1761 roster. William White born ca 1730, died ca Oct 1804 Haymarket, Prince William Co VA. Married 1st Mary ___ the mother of all of her children; 1.Elizabeth md Feb 28, 1786 James Bailey, son of Carr Bailey Sr who fought with William White Sr in Fr & In War. 2. Jemima/Mima md 1st George Greene Waddell Jan 10, 1791 Fauq.Co VA, md 2nd 1847 Stephen Wade Mason Co KY. 3. John White b 1753, Rev War soldier, md Ann White, thought to be his widowed step mother??? Needs more work to be sure. 4. William White Jr. Rev War soldier, S 1735 VA, born 10 Jan 1755, Pr Wm Co VA, died May 1833 Lincoln Co TN, md 1st unk. Md 2nd Elizabeth ___ born 1775 NC. [my direct line] 5. Nancy Ann b 1764 Fauq. Co md Oct 31, 1786 William Waddell Sr.6. Hannah born ca 1765 Fauq. Co VA, md Dec 13, 1787 Thomas Russell James in Fauq. Co VA. 7. Sarah b ca 1768 Fauq. Co VA. md Aug 25, 1789 Fauq. Co VA. Lived in Pr Wm Co VA at least from 1804 to 1816. George was deceased before 1816. George was co-appraiser of estate of his father in law with Wm's neighbor, William Hunton, in 1804 and George sold the estate to William Hunton. 8. Carr White b ca 1777 Fauq. Co, married Nancy Donaldson, dau. of John, Feb 19, 1795. Carr was underage and his father made his X to allow the marriage. William White Sr. married 2nd Ann Bailey, widow of James Bailey. Am not sure whose son this James was. Need some help with my Bailey's. William White Jr. fought in Rev War with Carr Bailey Jr. There were many marriages between these two families. I have copy of Donna Beer's book on Southern Bailey's but it only mentions Elizabeth White's marriage to James Bailey, son of Carr Bailey Sr. No other White marriage. Donna Beer's also wrote a book about Northern Bailey family. Need to check that book too. Any help appreciated. Ginny Keefer A lady named Diettrick lived in College Park, Maryland and filed D.A.R. for my William White born ca 1730. She filed for his daughter, Hannah White, who married Thomas Russell James in Fauquier Co VA. She was accepted. She listed William White's wife as Mary ____. Mary would have died prior to William. William made out his will in 1797 at Haymarket, Prince William Co VA and listed his children and second wife, Ann. William died in Oct 1804 and his land was then called Fauqueir Co VA. Haymarket was a bustling place when he lived there. It was located where the main road from PA went down to GA. etc south. I have seen the children listed for this William White for several years but he never had a son named William which was odd for those years. Finally a lady sent me a list of loose papers that had been found and are being kept in Woodruff Files in Fauquier Co Court House at Warren, VA. I used the information given and ordered the papers. Lo and Behold, He had a son named William. I always thought my William White was his eldest son. Perhaps because William stopped by Alexandria to see his brother John whom he found too ill to continue and took his place for several weeks. John caught up with his men while they were on a march to Willimasburg and relieved William to continue home. William did sign up again but took leave due to his own illness just before the end of the war. Somehow, I had it in my mind William was checking on a young brother. Anyway, you note in William White Sr's will, he mentions John as inheriting almost everthing like a first born son would in thos years. There was hard feelings for sure between William Sr and William Jr and father said near the bottom of his will that his son William was to be given on shilling current Virginia money and never no more even to his heirs. Yet William was at all the court trials from 1804 to 1825 helping his siblings get the will probated and settled. William remarried after Mary ---died to the widow of James Bailey. Her name was Ann _____. Wish I knew her maiden name. I am not sure which James Bailey she was widow too. Must have been Carr Bailey Sr's son James. William and Ann had no children together. She had 4 children by James Bailey that William White was made guardian of in court. I have had a copy of those papers for years. William, Thomas, Nanny and one other, prob James. There is a court paper that Mrs. White be given a debt owed to William White Sr after his death. There is another one that gives her 1/3 like a child from a parent would get too. Cant recall that father's name but think it was Mathis. Will look it up. I ordered about 75 pages of those court papers about the will. It states in it that John White, son of William White Sr. married Ann Bailey. I got the impression it was his step mother??? We have a cousin [who descends from Carr Bailey White who was born in Stokes Co and died in Lincoln Co TN] that I have sent a copy of all the papers. Paul R. White is a practicing attorney in Nashville and we will wait for him to give his educated opinion of whom John White married. definitely Ann Bailey, but was she the widow of his father????? Wm Sr. said Ann Bailey White would hold the strings for his property until she died or remarried. She fought having the land probated. William White's dau. Sarah, married George Roach and they lived in Prince William Co VA. All the other children listed in the will were living in Mason Co KY at least from 1804 when Wm died to 1816 when they each sent George Roach legally signed papers allowing George Roach to sell their share of their father's land for them. I hve copies of each of those letters. When the land was appraised, William Hunton, a next door neighbor of Wm White Sr and Wm's son in law, George Roach did the appraisal of the property. in Oct 1804. Then after the court ordered Ann to probate the will, George Roach sold the land to the next door neighbor, Wm. Hunton. The court case went on until 1825 which is probably when Ann Bailey White died. George Roach was deceased by them and Ann Bailey White's son, Thomas Bailey, was part of the executors who sold the land. I have copies all almost all of Wm White Sr's children's marriage bonds. William could not write. It seems to me that John White lived in Fauquier Co VA after his father's death. Yet, in 1840 US census showing soldiers still alive and receiving pensions, there is a John White age 78 living in northern Mason Co KY with Caleb White, son? I thought that was John as he lived there while the courts were churning on this will. My William was no doubt living in Stokes Co NC as that is where his children were born. It is same place that was called Rown Co NC before they cut old Rowan down to size. William White was there about 1786. He bought land from Isaac White in 1800 on Reedy Creek up close to top center of NC among the Moravians that William Jr appeared so often as witnesses for and with. There was no relationship mentioned between Isaac and William. I wonder if Isaac was his uncle??? I have a copy of that land sale. I was accepted into D.A.R. on William White Jr. His neighbors in Lincoln CO TN thought highly of him so I was surprised to see that he had such a severe problem with his father. There is a notice in a book about William White sueing Thomas James in Fauquier Co VA and the case being dropped due to death of the plantiff. I thought this to be William White Sr and his son in law.?? I believe it was in 1797 though. Will have to check athat date. William White Sr was very actice in Fauqueir Co. His x was on manydocuments, road improvements etc. His land adjoined the corners of Parnack George, his old friend and several others. All whose surnames appear in Lancaster Co VA with a William White. I wonder if my William White Sr b ca 1730 had a father named John since he named his first born, John. That was the habit the, First after the pateranl grandfather, second after the maternal grandfather, third after the father and fourth after the father's eldest brother as I recall. Correct me when necessary. I take that well and appreiciate the help.I am pleased with the work you do. Any ideas of how to obtain a copy of a land grant in Lincoln Co TN? When my William White, Rev War soldier, died May 6, 1833 in Iincoln Co TN, the land had to sit until his eldest son , James Franklin White born Aug 10, 1816 Stokes Co NC, obtained legal age to sell the land with the help of his younger brother, Carr Bailey who was 19 when James became 21.. They started selling the land in June 1837 and it was finalized in Dec 1837 Lincoln Co Court. They had a hold up with the court requiring them to have a copy of the land grant. They finally got the grant and sold the land to G.W.Martin. The land was located on Stephen's Creek and is supposed to be listed in Deed Book K-1, page 356 in Lincoln Co TN. I would love a copy of the deed. I am not sure where Stephen's Creek is located in Lincoln Co TN. I am sure my Rev War, soldier, William White and wife Elizabeth would have been buried on this land or at a near church or chapel neara by. I have been told they are buried on a hill.??. Anyone with any clues about where G.W. Martin's land was located to help me pinpoint where they could be buried.? I would like to have a D.A.R. marker on his graves even without him having a stone. I would get some of my cousins to help me purchase him a stone if we could find the place and get premission to do so. Children of William White Sr b ca 1730, died 1804 Haymarket, Prince William Co VA, married Mary ____. were; 1. Elizabeth Ann died after 23 May, 1816 md Feb 28, 1786 to James Bailey in Fauquier Co VA. [brother of Carr Bailey Jr] James died in war time young. 2. Jemima [Mima] [died aft Mar 22, 1816 when her father died] md 1st George Green Waddell in Fauquier Co VA, md 2nd 1847 Stephen Wade in Mason Co KY. She moved away ARK?? seems like. Will have to check my papers. 3. John White [Rev War soldier] b 1753m married Ann White ????? step mother??? 4. William White Jr. b 10 J1n 1755 Fauq Co VA, died May 6, 1833 Lincoln Co TN. Had at least 2 children in my opinion' Thomas J. White who seemed to hav a mental problem and required care and lived in Lincoln Co TN at times, and Edith Chapman White who married in Stokes Co NC to James Tucker and brought her children to Lincoln Co TN to complete their raising. My Rev War soldier, William White's grandson, William Clark White, was murdered Christmas Eve at his farm home door, he was shot to death. Returning discouraged Congf soldiers and skallawags came from twon to Wm's front gate. They were drunken and load. They demanded to know where William has hidden what little stock he had left and Wm refused to tell them. Wm's neighbors testified at the military trail that they had seen about 200 of Wm's Hogs being taken to town by the soldiers, They had seen soldiers riding Wm's horses in town and much more was taken. Wm White had 9 children under 16 andd a new bady due shortly. When Wm. Refused to tell them where what he had saved to feed his own large family, a young soldier on a horse right in front of Wm White shot Wm dead. Many of his neighbors had scurried through the bushes from town to see what the drunken soldiers were up to and several of Wm White's children and his wife were near him when he was murdered. He wife delivered William Clark [Babe] White within hours after seeing her sons murdered while standing next to her. She stated that two of her husband's nephews were among the gang. She said they were The Tucker boys and named them. When she asked one of the Tucker boys the name of the yuong man from Lawrence Co TN was, he heistiated but then told her he was Benjamin Franklin Herron, called William F. Herron in many of the court trials and said to have been only 14 when he was 17 at the time. When the soldiers refised to help Eliza get her husband into the house, she asked one of the Tucker nephews to run save her daughter, Charlotte, that she had sent to the nearest neighbor for hep and Herron rode hard after her. Tucker saved her life. The Tucker boys did nothing except be present. Even tried to help. Their mother was Edith Chapmen White who married James Tucker. Thus Edith had to have been a daughter of Rev War soldier by his 1st wife, Mary. I have looked for Chapman and White marriages in Rowan Co NC and Fauq Co VA to no avail. I think Thomas J. White was a son of that 1st marriage too. Wm White Sr married Elizabeth ___ who was 20 years younger than he in NC. Wm was aged 58 when their first child together was born 1814 NC named Martha md Mar 26, 1840 L:in Co TN to Samuel C. Miles. There were several White young men living in Stokes Co and Lincoln Co that could have been sons of Wm by his unk first marriage but I have found no proof of a connection. 5. Nancy Ann b 1764 Fauq. Co md Oct 31, 1786 William Waddell Sr. 6. Hannah b ca 1765 Fauq. died 1840 Clay Co IN, md Dec 13, 1787 Fauq. Co to Thomas Russell James. 7. Sarah b ca 1768 Fauq. Co married Aug 25, 1789 Fauq. All of above Children lived in Mason Co KY at least from 1804 to 1816 except; Sarah lived in Pr Wm Co VA and Wm Jr lived in Stokes Co NC still called Rowan Co NC then. I have been unable to locate Sam and Martha in Lincoln Co TN 1880 census. I am packing to move to Las Vegas so I do not have material to check. I received a packet several years ago and it seems to me they moved elsewhere but I am not sure. Will let you know when I get settled in Nov. Ginny Keefer PS; My E Mail in Las Vegas for some time will be Save so we do not lose touch.

In my own family, my earliest William White Sr. died in Prince William Co VA [thought to have lived in same place when it was called Lancaster/York Co VA- ?not proven yet] in 1797. His son, William White Jr., said in his Rev War Pension Application [S1735 VA] that after the Rev War- he served in was over-, he relocated to Rowan Co NC [and section that became Stokes Co NC] for 30 years before finally relocating to Lincoln Co TN where he died in May 1833. His children left descendants in Lincoln, Lawrence and Giles Co TN and then some went into Limestone Co AL. My William White Jr. and many of his NC neighbors appear for the first time in Lincoln Co TN 1820 census. Many of these same people came to NC from above named Virginia Counties. All of his descendants are listed in 1850 Giles Co TN census with many of his NC neighbors living there too. Ginny Keefer nee White

William married James Bailey's widow later. I am not sure if James and Ann Bailey had an older child named Carr Bailey or if he was a close relative. In the beginning of the Fauquier Co court cases disputing the will of William White, it was thought that Thomas Bailey, step son, of William White, actually wrote the will of William White Sr. It mentioned William White [Jr] stating he was to have 'one dollar?' and no more to him nor his heirs forever. Neighbors stated they had never heard William White Sr say anything against his second son, William White Jr. They did not believe William White Sr would do that. John White, the only other son, was on the Bailey children's side as benefited him. He had married one of the Bailey daughters and would have received a double share of his father's will. That is why the case was in Fauquier Co probate court from 1804 [when the Judge FORCED the widow, Ann [Bailey] White to probate the will] to 1824. Her husband had died in 1797. Eventually, Carr Bailey took up the case that Thomas Bailey had been leading for years. I do not know if Thomas Bailey died or why ?? Nor how Carr Bailey fit into Ann [Bailey] White's family in this will battle. There were many Carr Bailey's in early VA. In another clue sent: I am unsure what it means when it was stated elsewhere that John White made security for William White, the ' natural son' of Nancy White?? Was the child born out of wedlock maybe? Thank you Cpzb for sending me the help . .:**:.~* Ginny *~.:**:.
He had 7 children and 5 of them relocated from Fauquier Co VA to Mason Co KY shortly before 1800. I notice other Fauquier Co families also went to Mason Co KY and suspect the soldiers of the French & Indian War obtained land for their services in that war. My information;I have found the information that William White is listed on the 1761 Roster of Capt. William Edmond's Troops out of Fauquier Co VA. [William White [Sr.] died in 1797 at Haymarket, Prince William Co VA. His will was contested from 1804 to 1824 in Fauquier Co Courts. My White family were; William White [Sr] died 1797 Haymarket, Prince William Co VA in 1797. [His land must have been in area that became Fauquier in 1759]. His will was probated in 1804 at Fauquier Co VA. His first wife is not known to me. However, in the mid 1970's ,a lady submitted to D.A.R. the name, Mary ___, as his wife and mother of his children. She descended from Hannah [White] James lineage. [William White [Sr] is listed in the French & Indian War's 1761 Roster of Capt. William Edmond's Troops out of Fauquier Co VA]. William White [Sr] and Mary __? /s children were; 1. Jemima md George Greene Waddell Jan 10, 1791 2. John md Ann Bailey, dau of James and Ann Bailey. John was Rev War soldier. 3. They lived in Rowan Co portion that became Stokes Co NC for ca 30 years. They relocated to Lincoln Co TN where he died May 6, 1833. Hannah b ca 1765 md Dec 13, 1787 Thomas Russell James 7. Sarah b ca 1768, md Aug 25, 1789 George Roach. They lived out their lives in Pr Wm Co VA. 8. Carr b ca 1773 md Feb 19, 1795 Nancy Donaldson, dau of John. All of the children except William married in Fauquier Co VA. [I have no idea where he married in either marriage]. All but Sarah and William relocated to Mason Co KY in late 1700's. They all signed legal authorizations in Mason Co KY to allow George Roach, William White's executor, to sell his VA land for the heirs. Will was contested from 1804 to 1824 in Fauquier Co Court. William White [Sr] married late in life to Ann [Nancy?] Bailey, widow of James Bailey who died in 1777 at Fauquier Co VA. I need information as to who this James Bailey and wife Ann were. John White, son above mentioned, married daughter of James and Ann Bailey, who had become his step-sister when his father married the widow Ann Bailey. Also William White [Sr]'s daughter, Elizabeth White, married another James Bailey whom I 'think' was son of Carr Bailey Sr. a friend of her father. Needs verified. I have struggled with this White family for more than 20 years. Need any clues available. Anyone suggest any Prince William Co books that might be helpful to me? I have several Fauquier Co books but little to no help for me in them.
Book named "Kynd Kynn Knaum Kepe Coppage-Coppedge Chronicle, 1542-1975 " by Manahan and Coppage. Maxim Coppage was an editor of The Highlander Magazine for many years and a respected researcher. pp 16-20 Lists many names of interest to me in my 20 plus years of my White family research. I have proven my line to William White Sr. who died in 1797 at Haymarket, Prince William Co VA. His first wife was the mother of all his children and may have been named Mary ___. per 1970's D.A.R. membership. William married 2nd, Ann ____ Bailey, widow of James Bailey. Ann and William White had no children together . William White Jr was my next in direct line ancestor. In his RW pension [S1735 VA] application he stated that on his person he had proof he was born 10 Jan 1755 Fauquier Co VA [surely he knew it was still called Pr.Wm Co until 1759 but did not want to rock the boat so used the current name of place where he was born]. He further stated that after his tour of service he relocated to Rowan Co NC for 30 years, then moved to Lincoln Co TN where he died May 6, 1833. He only named one family member, Rev White soldier, John White. William was married to Elizabeth ___ born 1775, NC, 20 years his junior, and he was aged 58 when their first child together was born, Martha in 1814 [Stokes Co NC then]. Surely William White Jr. had a first wife and family. She probably died after their move to NC before 1813? I have found many documents naming neighbors and associates of my William White Jr. I notice the same surnames close in York/Lancaster Co's, then in Prince William and Fauquier Co so they probably never moved, county lines changed? Recorded in Cur 9d Jan Ano 1660, P Edw Dale Cl Cur I have not proof at hand but believe the two children in England were John and Ann White. William White's wife Ellin was never mentioned in VA that I could find. I suspect they were forced to leave England and children behind and infant William was born in crossing. Probably for religious reasons as I have read about that being common practice. There were children named Deborah, William with lame arm, Edward and John in Lancaster about same time. They may have been grandchildren of the William who died before above letter date.??? William married his newly widowed neighbor [spouse was Thos Brice] , Martha the same day her deceased husband's will was probated. It was dangerous for a woman alone then. [Jeremiah White and George Hewett, guardians to Mr. White's children] There is much more to indicate these Lancaster White's are the same who later appear in Pr Wm/Fauquier Co VA. Same surnames are in both areas. White's are very difficult to research. If above rings any tiny bell for you. let me know please. My particular White family relocated to from Fauquier Co VA to Mason Co KY and Rowan Co [section that became Stokes Co] NC, then to Lincoln Co TN by 1819. Virginia Lynn Keefer nee White.
