Luella was born in Juda and is shown in Clarno, Wisconsin in the 1900 Census. The family moved to Beloit in 1903 and is shown at 1225 Porter Ave. in the 1910 Census. After marriage to Herb, they lived on Yates Ave in Beloit. On March 20, 1933, they moved to Janesville at 820 Benton Ave.
On November 1, 1938, they moved to the 2nd. floor of a large two story house at 121 Wisconsin Ave. It was in the attic of this house that Luella and Herb taught their kids, Naola and John, tumbling and practiced there routines for shows and amateur contests. They moved to 4th Ave in the late 40's, stayed there for a couple of years, and then moved to 1650 Center Ave. This is the first house they ever owned. Herb died at this house in 1979 and Luella lived there until she moved into a retirement center a few years before her death in 1989.
Luella loved to play cards, Herb almost as much. Whenever the family got together or friends came over, cards were played. If only two were playing, it was cribbage. If four or eight, it was euchre. If there was an odd number playing, it would be dirty clubs. Whatever the game, she usually was the winner or on the winning team.
Luella and Ada Gardnerer, friend and fellow buyer, were in the LaSalle Hotel fire June 5, 1946.
Sixty people died in the fire and about 200 were injured. Luella and Ada were on the 13th. floor when the fire broke out. The emergency lights were not working and they worked their way to about the 4th
floor which was blocked off, and then to the 17th., looking for a fire escape. They sat exhausted, then heard a woman saying she had found the fire escape. They told her to keep yelling, and found her dog had found the fire escape. After going down 17 floors, Luella called her brother-in-law, Fred Haase, who lived in Chicago, who came and picked her and Ada up, and they spent the next couple of nights with him. When they went back to their room at the LaSalle, everything was there, except some jewelry.
