Text: Temperatures Blamed in Almshouse Death

SAN JOSE -- April 11 -- Heat which sent thermometers throughout Santa Clara County soaring t o the highest marks of the year was indirectly responsible for the death of Jim Mockbee, 64-y ear-old counry almshouse inmate, authorities said.
Giacomi Maggi, 47, also an almshouse inmate, was held at the county jail for investigati on of the case.
Temperatures hit 82 in most Santa Clara communities yesterday. Mockbee had been in il l health and was excused from his job of hoeing in the garden because of the temperature, Osc ar Martin, superintendent, said. Maggi was assigned to Mockbee's work.
Hot and tired when he finished the job, Maggi accosted Mockbee sitting in the shade an d upbraided him, authorities said.
When Mockbee defended himseld with a cane, officers charged, Maggi assertedly picked u p an iron bar and struck at him. A struggle ensued and Mockbee fell dead, apparently from hea rt troubled aggravated by the struggle.
