Family lived in the following Clayton Co, Iowa Townships: Elk, Millville and Mallory. 1852 As a child moved with family from Wayne Co, Ohio to Clayton Co, Iowa 5/8/1857 Land Purchase (Clayton Co, Iowa) Know all Men by these Presents, that we William NOLAND and Mary E NOLAND his wife of the County of Wayne and State of Ohio in considration of the sum of Fourt Hundred Dollars in had paid, by Joseph W CASSEL of Clayton County and State of Iowa do hereby Sell and Convey unto the said Joseph W CASSEL the following described premises, situated in the County of Clayton and State of Iowa, to-wit: The North East quarter of the South East quarter of section Fourteen (14) in Township Ninety One (91) North of Range Three (3) West, in the District of Lands subject to sale at Dubuque in the State of Iowa containing forty acres more or less. And we hereby covenant with the said Joseph W CASSEL that we hold said premises by good and perfect title, that we have good right, and lawful authority, to sell and convey the same, that they are free and clear from all liens and incumbrances whatsoever. About 1876 Moved to Thayer Co, Nebraska, later going to the town of Carleton, where he worked at the carpenter's trade. 1877-1878 Moved to Buffalo Co, Nebraska and homesteaded a quarter section about 40 miles from Kearney. Bishop conflicts with 1860 Census Information when "Wiley" was shown in Iowa with his parents at the age of 16. However, he was not living with his parents in the 1870 Census. Also states parents were born in HOLLAND, every census states Pennsylvania. His mother died in Iowa, not Wisconsin. "As a child, Joseph Wiley CASSEL lived in Dunn Co, Wisconsin. 10 years after he and Mary E. were married, they moved to Fillmore Co, Nebraska, where he pre-empted a quarter section. Mary and Joseph moved to Thayer Co, Nebraska and later to the town of Carlton where he worked as a carpenter. In the winter of 1877-78, he went to Buffalo Co, Nebraska where he homesteaded a quarter section 40 miles north of Kearney, Nebraska. He also bought another quarter section on Deer Creek.At the time of the gold rush in the Black Hills of South Dakota, he went prospecting. He located and named Cassel Creek in the Southern Foothills."
