Balthazar and Lillian both died of tuberculosis. They were sick a long time. Lillian and Jake would take rides out to the country in summer when their 2 teen age children were well enough to ride with them. When visiting the Hausers, the children would never come inside as a precaution so the Hausers would not contract the disease. The illness made their life almost unbearable at times, and though Jake never complained he talked about praying the rosary often with Lillian and Baldy when they were so sick. Both children knew they were going to die, waking thier parents early in the morning to announce "Today, dad I'm going to die", and so each did on their own particular day.
