Carl and Carolina Doberhul were residents of Schwirsin (in Pomirania), in the Province of Prussia, Germany when their daughter Ernestine Augusta was born on June 28, 1862. Ernestine had two older brothers: Friedrich and Carl and an older sister Emma. Eventually a younger brother and sister were added.
When Ernestine was 3, Carl and Carolina decided to come to America. They took passage on a sail boat and landed on Ellis Island, August 1865, after 5 stormy weeks at sea. Young Carl died at sea at the age of 5. Friedrich reached the age of 14, when he died of Brain Fever. The two younger children died in early childhood.
After all immigration details were settled, they came right to Milwaukee, where a brother of Carl's was already established in a small dairy business.
One of the first things Carl and Carolina did upon their arrival was to join the St. Paul's Lutheran Church. When they reached age; Friedrich, Emma and Ernestine were enrolled at the St. Paul's School.
When Emma and Ernestine were older they both joined the church choir. It was here that Ernestine Dobberhul and Otto became acquainted. It was some time before they became seriously interested in each other, but after about a years coutship, they were married on October 18, 1883.
They became the parents of six children: Otto (1884); Alma Ernestine (1885), Frederick William (1887); Edwin Oscar (1889), Walter Otto (1891) and Alfred George (1895). Otto Jr. died in infancy, all the other children reached adulthood and all, except Alma, who is the writer of this story, married and established their own homes.
....Through the years, Ernestine was a most faithful helpmate, a devoted wife and mother. She was called to her reward on June 2, 1934, at the age of almost 72[ott.FTW]
