  • Note: A member of the Privy Council & one of the four most powerful men in England, along with William Cecil, Robert Dudley & the Duke of Norfolk. Sussex favored Queen Elizabeth's marriage to the Archduke Charles of Austria. 2

  • Note: Sussex had done his best as Lieutenant of Ireland in an impossible situation & had paid for it with his health & his nerves, which had been so shattered that he had asked to be recalled. 2

  • Note: One of the English commissioners who examined the case of the Scottish Lords of the Congregation against Mary Queen of Scots. Queen Elizabeth declared the evidence to be inconclusive regarding whether Mary had planned the murder of her husband Henry Stuart Lord Darnley, as the Lords insisted. Mary was to remain in custody & the Lords were to return to Scotland. 7

  • Note: He was the leader of the anti-Dudley faction at court. Other prominent members included the Duke of Norfolk, Lord Hunsdon & Lord Howard of Effingham. 8
  • Occupation: He was sent by Queen Elizabeth to (supposedly) invest the Emperor Maximilian with the Knight of the Garter. His real purpose was to report back on her prospective bridegroom, the Archduke Charles, & to carry on marriage negotiations between England & the Empire. Those negotiations ended when Elizabeth refused the Emperor's last compromise proposal, which was that Charles would only practice his Catholic religion in private & would publicly attend Anglican services & undertake to never undermine the Church of England. Sussex blamed the failure of the negotiations & Elizabeth's rejection of them on the Earl of Leicester, Elizabeth's supposed paramour, & travelled despondently back to England. BET JUN 1567 AND DEC 1567 Vienna, Austria 2

      Chronological age estimator based on child's birthdate minus 20-25 years (for females), minus 30-35 years (for males) or minus a set # of years in those cases where an ancestor's birth date is known & a descendants' birth date is known (i.e. if five generations are known to have elapsed in a 150 year time interval, then the estimator is used for each generation, every 30 years). Also used for societies where children generally did not accede to kingships, etc., ascension date minus 30 years. Also used based on a known spousal birthdate, i.e. -2-4 years for females, +2-4 years for males.
