Ramona Harms 1930 2010 With sadness, her family announces the death of Ramona Mae Harms (nee Waltner) on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at the age of 79 years, at the Luther Special Care Nursing Home, Saskatoon, SK. Ramona was born on August 9th, 1930 at Marion, South Dakota, U.S.A., the fourth of five children of John P.M. and Bertha Waltner. Growing up on a farm near Marion, she attended a rural elementary school, followed by high school and junior college at Freeman, South Dakota. She then attended Bethel College at North Newton, Kansas, receiving her B.A. degree in 1954. Ramona spent five years as an elementary school teacher, in part before and then after finishing her schooling. In June, 1955, Ramona married Vernon Harms. Together, with a gradually growing family, they lived for varying time periods, first at Pretty Prairie, Kansas, where both taught in the public schools, and then Emporia and Lawrence, Kansas, while Vernon pursued graduate studies. After the birth of their first child, Ramona became a fulltime mother and homemaker. In 1963, the family moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, and in 1969, to Saskatoon, SK, where Vernon was a university professor. Ramona's interests included music (choral singing and piano), nature (bird watching and hiking), crafts and church activities. The last decade of her life was sadly overtaken by Alzheimer's dementia, and she gradually slipped away from us. Ramona was predeceased by her parents, brother Carroll Waltner, and sister-in-law Dorothy Waltner of Freeman, South Dakota. She is survived by her loving family: husband of 54 1/2 years, Vernon, of Saskatoon, SK; two daughters Sharon Harms (Paul Delorme) of Calgary, AB and Janelle Harms of Edmonton, AB; two sons Daryl Harms of Calgary, AB and Loren Harms of Canmore, AB; two grandchildren Ryan and Jaime Delorme of Calgary, AB; sister and brother-in-law Elaine and Arnold Regier of Mountain Lake, Minnesota; brother and sister-in-law Gene and Joyce Waltner, brother John Waltner, and sister-in-law Esther Waltner all of Freeman, South Dakota; sisters-in-law Doreen Harms and Marjorie Harms of Newton, Kansas. Farewell dear Ramona, we will greatly miss your loving and gentle soul. Sincere thanks are extended to all the wonderful caring staff at the Luther Special Care Nursing Home where Ramona's difficult last decade was spent. Her long final journey would have been impossibly difficult for herself and her family without the dedicated care and support of all the nursing staff and caregivers there. A Memorial Service in celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 16th, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home (east on 8th Street, turn right before railway crossing). Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ramona's memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan (1405 Faulkner Crescent, Saskatoon, SK., S7L 3R5), or the Luther Special Care Home (1212 Osler Street, Saskatoon, SK., S7N 0T9). Family and friends may send condolences from the website www.hillcrestmemorial.ca . Arrangements are entrusted to David Diakuw. (Saskatoon Star-Phoenix: January 15/16, 2010)
