Margaret was the only First Lady to come from Maryland. While staying with relatives in Kentucky, she met a 24 year-old Army Lieutenant ;named Zachary Taylor. They got married in Louisville, KY on June 21, 1810 and went on the have six children, two died in infancy. Throughout their marriage, Margaret Cheerfully followed her husband from fort to fort, enduring hardship and danger. Margaret looked forward to spending their retirement in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but her plans were dashed when the Whig Party nominated, then General Taylor for President in 1848. Margaret was so upset that she did very little for his campaign. Taylor won, but by the time he took office in 1849, his wife was a semi-invalid. Margaret avoided the White House social scene and remained secluded in her favorite upstairs room.
